Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s latest attempt to persuade the Trump administration to provide Ankara with state-of-the-art F-35 stealth warplanes is just the latest example of the Turkish leader’s willingness to indulge in double-dealing as part of his long-running campaign to establish Turkey as a dominant force in the Middle East.

Erdogan’s courtship of US President Donald Trump has so far succeeded to the extent that the American leader has publicly described Turkey as being “a tremendous ally for me” and also saying that he regards Erdogan as a personal friend.

Michigan Supreme Court orders review of permit for Enbridge oil pipeline under Great Lakes

The Michigan Supreme Court has ordered state regulators to reconsider a key permit that allowed a planned tunnel to carry an oil pipeline under part of the Great Lakes to move forward.

The 6-1 decision further clouds the future of the 73-year-old pipeline owned by Canadian energy transportation company Enbridge that carries petroleum from Superior, Wisconsin, to Sarnia, Ontario.

Call to prayer broadcast approved for Regina mosque

A Regina mosque has received approval to broadcast a weekly call to prayer.

On Friday, Regina City Jamia Masjid announced on social media that its Call to Prayer (Adhan) permit had been approved Thursday, allowing the mosque to broadcast the call from its loudspeaker on the building’s rooftop.

A growing number of west African countries are implementing or strengthening anti-LGBTQ+ laws, amid local political pressures and a global pushback against LGBTQ+ rights.

In March, Senegal doubled the maximum prison sentence for gay sex to 10 years and criminalised the “promotion” of homosexuality. Niger criminalised “sexual relations with a person of the same sex” in February, the first time same-sex intimacy had been outlawed in the country.

On Ukraine’s front lines, female soldiers testing Canadian-designed body armour

Ukrainian soldiers fighting on the front lines of Russia’s war are now testing curved body armour designed specifically for women so they’re better protected against bullets, shrapnel and drone strikes.

Ukrainian MP Iryna Nykorak said the majority of the more than 10,000 women serving in combat in her country are wearing ballistic plates for men that are too bulky, heavy and don’t fit their chests. Some decide not to wear the plate at all, which makes it useless, she said.

Cambridge professor made impossible claim he was on Seven Up

A Cambridge professor hailed as a diversity poster boy claimed that he had featured in Seven Up decades before he was born.

Prof Jason Arday said he had appeared in the TV series, which follows the lives of a group of people for decades from the age of seven.

The inaugural episode was broadcast in 1964. He was not born until 1985.

Canadian Mortgage Arrears Hit Recession Levels, Reality Is Likely Worse

Even more households are falling behind on their supersized mortgage payments. Canadian Bankers Association (CBA) data shows the mortgage arrears rate climbed in May. Mortgages at least 90 days past due have more than doubled since 2022, pushing the rate just shy of a decade high. Moscow restaurant blast a ‘brutal terror attack,’ mayor says

An explosion at a restaurant in central Moscow killed at least three people, including the suspected bomber on Saturday night, authorities said.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described it as a “brutal terrorist attack.”

“Law enforcement agencies are investigating the circumstances of the incident. Those responsible for this crime will certainly be found and face the punishment they deserve,” he said in an online post on Sunday.

Poilievre calls for Iran-backed militant group connected to two attacks in Canada to be classified as terrorist entity

Canada’s Conservative leader is calling on Ottawa to designate an Iran-backed militant group as a terrorist entity after one of its members was accused of contributing to an attack on a Canadian synagogue, as well as the March shooting at the U.S. consulate in Toronto.

Pierre Poilievre says in a letter to Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree that American authorities have found that Kata’ib Hezbollah and its alleged commander directed attacks on Canadian soil.

Islamophobia: Khaliq Hussain Anwar arrested for vandalizing Toronto church

A Toronto man is facing charges after allegedly attending a church in East York on three separate occasions and causing damage.

The first incident happened on July 24.

Toronto police say the accused “threw a rock through a window, causing damage to the religious property.”

Khaliq Hussain Anwar, 56, of Toronto, has been charged with three counts of mischief relating to religious property. The charges have not been tested in court.

Trump cancels Iran strikes subject to deal being made ‘rapidly’

Donald Trump says he has cancelled strikes against Iran, provided a deal is struck “rapidly” with the country.

In a post on Truth Social, the US president said he had been asked by Iran and other countries in the Middle East to “hold off” on any attack as the “perimeters” of a deal had been agreed.

Trump’s comments came after reports that the US and Israel may have been planning new, intense strikes on Iran.
