OTTAWA — U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to occupy Greenland will only make Canada’s sovereignty claims in the Arctic more vulnerable, defence analysts says.
Former chief of the defence staff retired Gen. Tom Lawson said the U.S. setting a precedent of taking Greenland for strategic hemispheric purposes should put the Canadian government on high alert.
A big complaint of western businesses when Beijing first opened up its economy was that the Chinese never seemed to understand the concept of a deal. There would be a handshake and a document signing but then, when the investment money arrived or the first order from a factory was dispatched, the Chinese side would seek to renegotiate terms all over again.
That must be how President Xi is feeling now, only with the boot firmly on the other foot — in this case that of President Trump, who has his own unique approach to dealmaking.
On Dec. 5, 2025, the president of the United States announced a new national security strategy. Each successive U.S. administration issues such a document at the beginning of its term, forcing a reassessment of national security at least every four years. It is a foundational exercise for government and for the public.
The release has gone largely unnoticed by Canadian media and officials, save for a few comments from the minister of National Defence. The minister said he was “taking note” of the new U.S. strategy but that Canada would follow its own national security strategy. Many Canadians are left wondering what that strategy actually looks like.
Canada may soon be cheering Donald Trump on in his stated goal of acquiring Greenland.
Well, not really — the elites running Canada will not be agreeing to anything the U.S. president does — but the rest of us might wish to bid him good luck.

The Somali fraud scandal has captured Americans’ imaginations. CALGARY — The US Deputy Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary, Jim O’Neil, has bashed Canada’s medical assistance in dying (MAiD) program as being a “strange new horror” when it comes to its organ donations.
Reported by the Washington Examiner, O’Neil stated MAiD has crossed ethical boundaries by using it as a tool to increase organ donation — citing Canada has become a world leader in organ transplant policy from deceased patients.

WASHINGTON — President Trump declared Monday that the US would be “screwed” if the Supreme Court rules against his reciprocal tariff policies — arguing the feds would have to “pay back” billions in revenue collected over the past year.
“[I]f the Supreme Court rules against the United States of America on this National Security bonanza, WE’RE SCREWED!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Canada is offering to contribute military assets to a multilateral force being proposed by Germany and Britain to boost NATO’s presence in Greenland, government sources said.
One official said that Prime Minister Mark Carney raised with allies the issue of reinforcing the Arctic, including Greenland, when he was in Europe last week. “We welcome the German and British plan and are actively involved in talks with NATO and our allies,” the official said.
Bloomberg reported on Sunday that European countries, led by Germany, are preparing a plan aimed at showing President Donald Trump that the continent is serious about Arctic security.

Sporting tensions between the USA and Canada have erupted once again, this time in skeleton as next month’s Winter Olympics approach.
The USA’s Katie Uhlaender, a five-time Winter Olympian in skeleton, has accused the Canadian team of depriving her of a place at the Milan-Cortina Games by manipulating a qualifying event over the weekend.
Uhlaender says that Canada deliberately pulled four of its six athletes from the race in the North American Cup in Lake Placid, New York. That meant the field was reduced to under 21 athletes and fewer qualifying points were on offer due to the lack of competition. Uhlaender believes the Canadian team did so to prevent American athletes from catching them in the standings for Olympic qualifying.
