President Trump announced early Wednesday that his administration will strip federal funding from sanctuary cities and states, in line with policies he promoted on the campaign trail.
“EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY FIRST, NO MORE PAYMENTS WILL BE MADE BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO STATES FOR THEIR CORRUPT CRIMINAL PROTECTION CENTERS KNOWN AS SANCTUARY CITIES,” the president wrote in a post on Truth Social.

Canadian soldiers won’t be joining their European allies for a show of military force in Greenland.
Danish Armed Forces have begun deploying troops to the Arctic island in response to American insistence that it needs Greenland to bolster national security in the north. The Danes are being joined by small numbers of troops from European countries, including France, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Britain.
WASHINGTON—The State Department will indefinitely pause immigrant visa processing for 75 countries as part of the Trump administration’s ongoing effort to block low-income foreigners from immigrating to the U.S.
The pause takes effect starting Jan. 21, and will halt visa issuance to people looking to immigrate permanently, typically through marriage, family ties or work sponsorship. It doesn’t block people from obtaining tourist or temporary work visas.
The countries affected span the globe and include many in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. Visa processing will now be paused for Russia, Thailand, Morocco, Colombia and Brazil, among others, according to a State Department official briefed on the plan.

The three men arrested for ambushing an ICE agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday have all been identified as illegal immigrants from Venezuela who were let into the country under the Biden administration, officials said Thursday, calling the attack an “attempted murder” of federal law enforcement officers.
The Department of Homeland Security said the suspects — Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, Alfredo Alejandro Ajorna and Gabriel Alejandro Hernandez-Ledzema — were all in the country illegally, and are now in ICE custody.
Buying Greenland could cost the United States as much as $700bn, officials have estimated, as Donald Trump presses on with his efforts to acquire the island.
Denmark and Greenland insist the semi-autonomous Danish territory is not for sale, but the US president has insisted he will take it “one way or the other” for national security reasons.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey claimed ICE agents in the city were “causing chaos” after an illegal immigrant armed with a shovel “ambushed” an officer and was shot on Wednesday.
Frey blamed the nearly 3,000 federal officers deployed across Minneapolis as the reason for the disorder — which included the shooting death of 37-year-old anti-ICE agitator Renee Nicole Good — that has taken hold of the Minnesota area over the last week.

Denmark and at least three of its European allies are sending troops to Greenland after negotiations in Washington failed to deliver a breakthrough on President Trump’s demands to own the territory.
The hastily convened military deployment, a prelude to a larger exercise called Operation Arctic Endurance, will involve soldiers, naval vessels and aircraft from Denmark, and small numbers of unarmed or lightly armed personnel from Germany, Norway and Sweden.
Norway confirmed that it was sending two officers and Germany, which described the deployment as a “reconnaissance” mission, will send 13 personnel. France, Canada and the Netherlands are among the other Nato allies that may make contributions.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who fatally shot Renee Good last week in Minneapolis, Jonathan Ross, suffered internal bleeding to the torso following the incident, according to two U.S. officials briefed on his medical condition.
It was unclear how extensive the bleeding was. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed Ross’ injury, but has not yet responded to CBS News’ requests for more information. This story will be updated as we learn more.

WASHINGTON — The State Department and Treasury Department jointly announced Tuesday that the US is designating chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood based in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon as foreign terror groups.
Muhammad Fawzi Taqqosh, the leader of the Lebanese Muslim Brotherhood, will be listed as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT), according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“These designations reflect the opening actions of an ongoing, sustained effort to address Muslim Brotherhood chapters’ violence and destabilization wherever it occurs,” Rubio said in a statement.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Monday elbowed its way into the debate over President Donald Trump’s effort to acquire Greenland, slamming the U.S. for “using other countries as an excuse for pursuing its own selfish interests.”
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning was responding to a reporter who quoted Trump saying that if America does not acquire Greenland, “Russia or China will.”
China is not an Arctic nation.
The U.S. government quietly acquired a device in late 2024 that officials believe may be connected to the debilitating condition known as “Havana Syndrome,” which more than 1,500 American officials have reported experiencing since 2016, according to multiple sources briefed on the matter who spoke with CBS News.
The device was purchased clandestinely in the final weeks of the Biden administration by the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations division, using Pentagon funding that exceeded eight figures, according to two people familiar with the matter. The device is portable, backpack-sized, and contains components of Russian origin, the two people said.
