Watchdog asked to probe former China envoy Dominic Barton’s job appointment

The federal Ethics Commissioner has been formally asked to investigate whether Canada’s former ambassador to Beijing, Dominic Barton, violated ethics rules when he accepted an offer to become chair of Rio Tinto, a global mining company that does much of its business in China.

Two New Democratic MPs wrote to the commissioner, Mario Dion, on Friday. Their letter says they believe Mr. Barton is in breach of the Conflict of Interest Act because he met with executives of Rio Tinto shortly before the end of his time as a diplomat.

Ottawa Pursues Ontario’s Failed Energy Policies as Ex-Premier Admits Mistakes

Former Ontario Liberal premier Kathleen Wynne said in a recent interview with Maclean’s that she gives herself a low score on the energy file, and an affordable energy advocate is warning that the federal government is going down the same road Ontario took.

“I score myself very low on the electricity price. I believed that the investments that we had made in the electricity sector were important,” Wynne told Paul Wells of Maclean’s.

OTTAWA — The Canadian government has signed onto tax breaks, security costs and eased travel rules in order to have the FIFA World Cup come to Canada in 2026.

Canada won a joint bid with the U.S. and Mexico for the 2026 event, which will see the majority of games played in the U.S., but 10 games will be played in Canada with Toronto and Edmonton the potential host cities. Montreal was a candidate city, but pulled out earlier this year over cost concerns.

All the usual palms will be greased.

Extremist ideas have followed the Shaykh back to the United States, where, in his sermons and lectures, he has reportedly attempted to justify sex slavery and has “expressed support for the killing of apostates and adulterers.”

As China aims to manipulate Canadian politics, parliamentarians look the other way

It was one of Parliament’s only open windows into the Trudeau government’s secretive dealings with Xi Jinping’s regime in Beijing. It was one of the few vantage points available for Canadians to get a glimpse of the Chinese regime’s influence operations in Canada.

Now it’s gone, at least for now, and while the Liberals’ aversion to any scrutiny of its China diplomacy is well known, it’s falling to the Conservative Party to shake off suspicions that its own internal calculus is the reason why the House of Commons Special Committee on Canada-China Relations is no more.

BONOKOSKI: Full Olympic boycott would have sent stronger message

Now that the U.S. has shuffled to the left enough for Canada to be a politically-aligned neighbor, it seemed the easy choice to follow President Joe Biden and also “diplomatically” boycott next year’s Winter Olympics in Beijing.

More Government Workers, Fewer Self-Employed: What That Means for Canada’s Economy

The percentage of self-employed Canadians is the lowest it’s been in almost 35 years, while public sector employment is at its highest percentage in nearly 30—and neither trend bodes well for the economy.

Just 2.6 million Canadians identified as self-employed in October, according to Statistics Canada. This is a 10.8 percent drop from the peak level of around 2.92 million in September 2019. Self-employed workers’ current share of 13.6 percent of total employment (19.16 million) has not been this low since July 1987.

It’s bad news for all of us. The Liberal party have “hired” our ruling class. A predatory bureaucracy that sucks your wealth for their personal gain and votes LPC who ensure their place at the trough. What could go wrong?

Dairy farmers pushed record-breaking price hike for milk even higher

A record-breaking price hike for milk announced by the Canadian Dairy Commission would have been lower if the country’s dairy farmers hadn’t intervened.

The commission announced in October it would be raising the price paid to farmers for milk next year by 8.4 per cent. Internal records obtained by Global News show the increase would have been less if the normal method for setting prices was used.

“The (commission’s) process ignores impacts on Canadian retailers, restaurants and families,” Michelle Wasylyshen, national spokesperson for the Retail Council of Canada, said.

Slick marketing videos, congratulatory social media posts and crowdfunding websites across the internet tell the story of two brothers on a mission to change the world, but under closer scrutiny those digital crumbs lead down a trail of contradictions and deception.

“I don’t know how they thought they could get away with it for so long,” said a former WE employee. CBC agreed to conceal their identity because they were concerned about legal reprisals from the charity for speaking out.

Canada has no choice but to bar Huawei from 5G mobile networks, security experts say

OTTAWA — As the Liberal government prepares to unfurl its policy on next-generation mobile networks, global security experts say all signs point to the exclusion of Chinese vendor Huawei Technologies from the long-awaited blueprint.

The development of 5G, or fifth-generation, networks will give people speedier online connections and provide vast data capacity to meet ravenous demand as more and more things link to the internet and innovations such as virtual reality, immersive gaming and autonomous vehicles emerge.

The opposition Conservatives have long pressed the Liberals to deny Huawei a role in building the country’s 5G infrastructure, saying it would allow Beijing to spy on Canadians more easily.
