OTTAWA — Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre took aim at Carney’s newly formed majority Liberal government Tuesday and pushed for more relief over fuel prices, bringing forward an opposition motion calling for longer term relief at the pumps.
“We should eliminate the gas tax for the rest of the year, reducing cost by 25 cents a litre, 20 dollars on a tank of gas, 1,200 dollars for the whole year,” Poilievre said.

Monday evening’s byelection results — with the Liberals retaining two Toronto-area seats — coupled with the stunning floor-crossing of Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu to Carney’s ranks last week, pushed the Liberals solidly into majority government territory. Another byelection on Monday, in Quebec’s Terrebonne riding, could add to the Liberal margin if the party can fend of a fierce challenge from the Bloc Québécois.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says he will use his newly won majority to push through legislation that the opposition parties have stymied in recent years, saying his immediate focus will be quickly passing affordability measures and a bill designed to turbocharge home construction.
The Liberal candidates in two Toronto ridings trounced their opponents in Monday’s byelections, improving on the party’s already strong showing in both seats at the last general election. The party also won a closely fought contest in Terrebonne, a Montreal-area riding that has long been a Bloc Québécois stronghold.
Carney framed those victories, particularly the one in Quebec, as a strong endorsement of the government’s agenda.

Historical analogies are never exact, and some can be misleading. With the announcement by President Trump of a naval blockade or quarantine of the Strait of Hormuz, the specter of another Cuban Missile Crisis comes to mind. In October 1962, President John F. Kennedy ordered the U.S. Navy to institute a blockade of Cuba to prevent more offensive weapons from being supplied to the Castro regime in Cuba by the Soviet Union. Kennedy used a blockade instead of air strikes on missile installations in Cuba to give maximum flexibility for diplomacy to end the crisis. Kennedy’s blockade worked, a deal was struck, but it was, to quote the Duke of Wellington about Waterloo, a “close run thing.”

Whenever we speak on our podcast about the falling fertility rate, inevitably we hear from viewers saying that the cause is simple: people are choosing to have fewer kids. They point out that countries all over the world are dealing with this collapse, and there is no solution. It’s a nice, tidy explanation that takes away the need for action. If people are choosing fewer kids, that must be their preference, and we can’t do anything about it.
