We all knew this would be a train wreck. White House Steward Joe Biden has left Saudi Arabia humiliated. In 2020, Biden declared that the kingdom was a “pariah” after the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. I couldn’t care less. The man walked into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to collect certain documents regarding his pending marriage. He probably knew the risks. The nasty part about this story isn’t the sordid tales of torture and dismemberment that reportedly happened to Khashoggi. It’s the reaction. Everyone acted as if Walter Cronkite was the person butchered. The outrage was more intense because Khashoggi died while Trump was president. There would have been a more muted response if Hillary were at the helm.

Germany is beginning to ration heating, electricity in the streets and water in swimming pools. It looks like news from 1942, but instead it is from 2022 and comes from the Financial Times.

Europe’s largest and richest country is running out of energy after Russia decided to cut gas supplies, causing prices to skyrocket and triggering the biggest crisis since 1973. “The situation is more than dramatic,” said Axel Gedaschko, head of the federation of German construction companies GdW. “The social peace of Germany is in grave danger”.

“Hamburg could ration hot water,” headlines Der Spiegel. Economy Minister Robert Habeck has appealed to the population to save energy and take shorter showers. Vonovia, a colossus of residential properties, lowers the temperature of the gas heating of its tenants between 11 pm and 6 am. The district of Lahn-Dill in Frankfurt has suspended hot water in its schools and gyms since mid-September, Düsseldorf closes a huge swimming pool complex, Berlin lowers the thermostat of outdoor pools and Cologne street lighting to 70 for one hundred starting at 11.00pm.

David Boim was 17 when members of Hamas, a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization, shot and killed him at a bus stop in the West Bank in 1996. Boim’s parents successfully sued a network of American-based Palestinian nonprofit groups in federal court for financing the terrorists that killed their son, and a federal judge ultimately awarded the family a $156 million judgment under the Anti-Terrorism Act following a jury trial in 2004.

Death for “Blasphemers” in Pakistan

On July 4, 2022, a Christian mechanic who had been imprisoned for the last five years, awaiting trial under a false accusation of “blasphemy” for allegedly insulting the Muslim prophet Muhammad, was sentenced to death by hanging in a Pakistani court.

Five years earlier, on June 5, 2017, Ashfaq Masih, 34, had gotten into a quarrel with Muhammad Naveen, a rival who had established a mechanics’ workshop near Masih’s. According to Masih’s not guilty plea, Muhammad “was jealous because my business was running better,” and, after their altercation, “threatened me with dire consequences.”

Trump aide Dr Deborah Birx claims Covid ‘came out of the box ready to infect’ – claiming virus was being worked on by scientists in a Chinese lab

Former US President Donald Trump’s Covid adviser believes the virus could have leaked from a lab where it was being worked on by scientists.

Infectious diseases expert Dr Deborah Birx told The Mail on Sunday that coronavirus ‘came out of the box ready to infect’ when it emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2020. The adviser said most viruses take months or years to become highly infectious to humans. But, Dr Birx said, Covid ‘was already more infectious than flu when it first arrived’.

She said that meant Covid was either an ‘abnormal thing of nature’ or that Chinese scientists were ‘working on coronavirus vaccines’ and became infected.

Ukraine moves closer to getting F-15 and F-16 fighter jets as Washington approves training programme

The US has been cautious about sending equipment to Ukraine because it is worried that American weapons may be used in Russian territory

Ukraine moved closer to adding more modern American fighter jets to its air force this week after US lawmakers agreed to pay for pilots to be trained on F-15s and F-16s in the States.

The US Congress approved a Defence Authorisation Act this week that contained a $100 million amendment to help shift Ukraine’s military hardware away from its ageing Soviet-era technology, which currently includes MiG-29s and Sukhoi planes.

“Ukrainian pilots are going to be taught to fly F-15 and F-16 fighters in the USA,” Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian Presidential Administration, said on Saturday.

Freshii’s ‘virtual cashier’ is bad omen for Canada labour shortage

In April, Canadian-based fast-food chain Freshii came under intense scrutiny after the company pivoted to serving customers via ‘virtual cashiers’ based in other countries.

Instead of having a Canadian employee take customer orders, Freshii hired employees from Nicaragua, Bolivia and Pakistan to serve customers by screen, at starkly lower hourly wages to the tune of $3.75 US an hour. Of course, Ontario’s minimum wage is $15 an hour.

That horse has left the barn. If it can be automated or offshored it will be.

A Reuters Institute survey found that a rising number of people are avoiding the news or just don’t believe it

This might be just another negative news story. And if it is, there is evidence that many of you will turn away in despair.

The Reuters Institute revealed last month that 42% of Americans actively avoid the news at least some of the time because it grinds them down or they just don’t believe it. Fifteen percent said they disconnected from news coverage altogether. In other countries, such as the UK and Brazil, the numbers selectively avoiding it were even higher.

“In the United States, those who self-identify on the right are far more likely to avoid news because they think it is untrustworthy or biased, but those on the left are more likely to feel overwhelmed, carry feelings of powerlessness, or worry that the news might create arguments,” the institute said.

“They didn’t even take the time to tie their hands or blindfold them. They just executed them. Some even while they were still walking. One bullet and that was it,” said Muhammad, a 29-year-old driver and one of the prisoners who survived and witnessed the entire thing.
