GOLDSTEIN: Defences of PM’s carbon tax ‘wildly optimistic’

Three letters to the editor in the Toronto Sun Wednesday all raised the same invalid points in defending Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s carbon tax.

They said a recent report by the Parliamentary Budget Officer that found most households in Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba will be paying more in carbon taxes than they get in rebates between 2021 and 2030 was flawed.

Trudeau government says pope’s apology to Indigenous not enough

QUEBEC CITY (AP) — The Canadian government made clear Wednesday that Pope Francis’ apology to Indigenous peoples for abuses in the country’s church-run residential schools didn’t go far enough, suggesting that reconciliation over the fraught history is still very much a work in progress.

The official government reaction came as Francis arrived in Quebec City for meetings with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Governor General Mary Simon at her Quebec residence, the hilltop Citadelle fortress, on the second leg of Francis’ week-long visit to Canada.

The government’s criticisms echo those of some survivors and concern Francis’ omission of any reference to the sexual abuse suffered by Indigenous children in the schools, as well as his original reluctance to name the Catholic Church as an institution bearing responsibility.

Whistleblowers Accuse FBI Of ‘Padding’ Domestic Terrorism Stats To Play Up Threat: Report

FBI officials are allegedly pressuring agents to reclassify cases as “domestic violent extremism,” despite weak evidence that the cases belong in such a category.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, said in a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray on Wednesday that whistleblowers at the FBI say the bureau is “padding domestic terrorism data” to make the threat seem larger than it is. The bureau is misclassifying cases as due to Domestic Violent Extremists (DVEs) to support an administration “narrative” about the threat presented by DVEs, Jordan said.

The FBI sounds more and more like the SPLC and the ADL – The ADL’s extremism statistics make it seem like ultraright-wing violence in the US is more common than it actually is

Quebec’s Conservative party surges in the polls as some of its candidates spread conspiracy theories

“… The surge in popularity for Duhaime’s party comes as conservative libertarians across the country, at both the provincial and federal levels, are feeling emboldened by frustrations at pandemic restrictions.

Recent polling suggests anti-mandate libertarians, at both the federal and provincial levels, are attracting support of Canadians who are distrustful not just of government regulations, but of scientific authorities, mainstream media outlets and democratic institutions in general.

… A recent study, based on polling data, found that 50 per cent of the party’s supporters were either “convinced” or “moderate” adherents of conspiracy theories.

Among Quebec Liberal supporters, 31 per cent were classified as conspiracy theorists and so were 29 per cent of Parti Québécois supporters.

Distrustful of government regulations? That just being prudent. The government is never your friend said a wise lady I know.

Distrustful of Scientific authorities? Would they be the ones who tampered with the Alzheimer studies? Or the ones who with Big Pharma pushed meds for depression when no proof of their efficacy has been established?

Distrustful of Media! Thanks for the laugh CBC.

Distrustful of democratic institutions in general? This from the same CBC that ran with the Russia Collusion hoax for literally years?

Canada urges gay and bisexual men to reduce their sexual partners to stem monkeypox.

The federal government is asking gay and bisexual men to reduce their number of sexual partners to curb the spread of monkeypox. But community health workers and advocates say that spread is being fuelled by the lack of government support, financial and otherwise, for those who are at risk.

“The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends practising safer sex (and) having fewer sexual partners, particularly anonymous partners, even when they don’t have symptoms, can also reduce your risk of getting infected,” said Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, at a news conference Wednesday. Tam also stressed the value of vaccination in thwarting the disease.

Graeme Lamb, a union steward of Steamworks Baths, a bathhouse in Toronto’s Gay Village, responded by saying, “Monkeypox is not spreading because gay men are having too much sex. It’s spreading because we have not had governments that are willing to commit the resources that are necessary to stop it from spreading and stopping it from causing people a lot of pain.”

Because you need cash to refrain from random sex and get an available vaccine for a widely publicized affliction targeting Gay men.

Is the Trudeau government homophobic or what!

Harper passes the Populist-conservative torch to Poilievre and he talks to Jews warns CBC

In practice, populism often seems more bent on finding scapegoats than offering solutions

Stephen Harper has said the Conservative government he led from 2006 to 2015 practiced what he calls “populist conservatism.” A Conservative Party led by Pierre Poilievre — endorsed by Harper this week — will fully embrace that description.

One can only speculate about why the former prime minister decided to take the unusual step of endorsing a candidate in the current leadership race — and why he chose to do so now. Maybe the Poilievre campaign has some reason to believe it needs an extra push to get over the line.

I found the CBC’s photo selection and accompanying caption an odd choice. There must be thousands of pics the CBC has access to but why choose this one? A random pick or a subtle message sent to fellow travelers that Harper and hence Poilievre not only support Israel but Harper has had dealings with the dread AIPAC… the feared “Jewish Lobby.”

Feds propose to pay $1,337 for AR-15 under mandatory firearms buyback program

OTTAWA – The federal government is proposing $1,337 in compensation for turning in an AR-15 rifle under a mandatory buyback program.

Public Safety Canada has released a price list detailing how much money owners of banned firearms can expect to get under the program.

At the higher end of the scale, forfeiting a Swiss Arms SG550 could net an owner $6,209.

Leading Alzheimer’s theory undermined: Did tampering waste 16 years of research?

Hundreds of millions of dollars and years of research across an entire field may have been wasted due to potentially falsified data that helped lay the foundation for the leading hypothesis of what causes Alzheimer’s disease.

The allegations centre around a landmark 2006 study — a paper which has been cited nearly 2,300 times — whose findings identify a protein called amyloid beta as a cause of Alzheimer’s. Since then, the hypothesis that sticky deposits of amyloid beta form plaques in the brain that slow cognition has dominated Alzheimer’s research and treatment development.

How Himars could force Russia into an embarrassing collapse in Ukraine

Some weeks ago the Russians announced an “operational pause” in the Donbas.

Breaks in fighting like these are pretty normal in this type of high-intensity warfare, because of the vast supplies required and damages inflicted.

Armies sometimes just have to take time-outs to regroup and build up their supplies again, although normally you don’t broadcast to everyone that you’re doing it.

That’s a bit odd, and makes it seem like there must be another reason that Russian military activity has decreased.

The Israeli journalist who visited Mecca should be worried

(July 27, 2022 / JNS) Most non-Muslims have difficulty understanding why they are not allowed to enter Mecca. Israeli journalist Gil Tamary certainly appears to have lacked understanding when he secretly entered the city after covering U.S. President Joe Biden’s recent visit to Saudi Arabia, causing a scandal with potentially important ramifications for Israel-Saudi relations.

Will Europe survive? … Only nationalisation can stave off disaster

Survive? Not under this flag.

In our age of crisis, the state has been reawakened, breaking the taboos of the past few decades. But it’s still an uphill climb. Over the past 40 years, there was broad political agreement that markets were not to be meddled with, and that the power of the state had to be reined in. Economists such as Milton Friedman argued that the overbearing nature of the Keynesian state had suffocated the entrepreneurial spirit, making workers lazy and entitled. Much of this situation, they claimed, was the result of intrusive government interfering with the smooth running of the free market.

The harridans on The View got rebuked by their own legal department

Turning Point USA had its summit in Florida last week, and, predictably, a lot of manifestly fake Nazis showed up, to imply that American conservatives, who are dedicated to individual liberty, are in fact National Socialists, who are, well, socialists. Only very stupid people would believe that this small group with their fresh-out-of-the-package banners were Nazis — and that brings me to the gals on ABC’s The View. Their credulous opinings were so bad that ABC had to read a statement rejecting their assertions about Turning Point USA.

The lights are going out across Europe

The EU’s plan for mandatory gas rationing is utterly terrifying.

The EU’s 27 member states – all modern, advanced industrialised economies, some among the richest in the world – are about to start rationing their energy supplies. This week, at an extraordinary summit, EU members agreed to a European Commission proposal to slash their gas use by a punishing 15 per cent over the next eight months. From August 2022 to March 2023, the lamps will, quite literally, be going out all over Europe.

Environmentalism is an Environmental Hazard

Solar panel lead in the groundwater and wind turbine fiberglass in your lungs.

20 years after voters rejected ‘toilet-to-tap’ water, Los Angeles Democrats brag that they will be the first city in the state to pipe toilet water to faucets for the sake of the environment.

As part of the city’s version of the Green New Deal, a majority of Los Angeles water will be ‘toilet-to-tap’. California Democrats, who refuse to build new dams or do anything to expand water resources, are set to spend at least $12 billion on what they describe as “locally sourced” water which certainly sounds nicer than toilet water. The environmentalist elites will go on drinking bottled water and it will be the city’s poor drinking out of the toilet.
