There may be no more hazardous exercise for a Canadian newspaper columnist these days than attempting to interpret Donald Trump’s trade policies. To suggest that there might be some logic behind his moves to undo the rules of the global trading system that he insists have been skewed against the United States is to invite accusations of gaslighting on behalf of the most mendacious, immoral and incompetent U.S. President of the past 250 years.
Here it goes anyway.

It was sent by Carter-Ruck, a famously combative law firm whose roster of clients has included various Russian oligarchs, crypto fraudsters and scandal-affected celebrities, along with the ultra-litigious Church of Scientology.
This time, they were representing a different sort of complainant: Jason Arday, a man the letter described as a ‘distinguished and highly respected scholar of race, inequality and education’ at Cambridge University.

A madman gunned down two people and wounded several others at a brand new In-N-Out Burger in Idaho on Saturday, sending panicked patrons running for their lives.

It says much about our current condition that sometimes the most insightful political commentary appears as satire at The Babylon Bee. Yesterday morning one of the Bee’s headlines read “To Fight Antisemitism, Mamdani Announces Mandatory ‘Safety Camps’ for Jewish Residents.” The article has Mamdani supposedly saying that the “best way to keep Jews safe is by concentrating them into tiny camps away from those who would do them harm,” with further references to transporting them by train as part of the mayor’s “final solution” to the antisemitism problem.

President Donald Trump has never been shy about identifying the source of America’s manufacturing decline. For decades, policymakers pursued trade policies that rewarded companies for chasing the lowest possible labor costs, hollowing out American industry while enriching geopolitical competitors like China. Whether one agreed with his rhetoric or not, President Trump fundamentally changed the national conversation by insisting that trade should serve American workers, not simply multinational corporations.

France’s climate minister expressed horror at the very notion of artificial indoor cooling. “Do you think that’s going to prevent forest fires?” she said. “Do you think that’s going to prevent a crop from dying?” Germany’s state broadcaster added to “climate awareness” with this pearl of wisdom: “Air conditioners: what cools us down, heats up the Earth.”
The number of executions in Iran has surged dramatically in 2026, accompanied by widespread human rights violations: torture, sham trials, and the systematic repression of dissent.
Iranian authorities have carried out hundreds of executions so far, and it is only August. There were more than 100 in June, with the total climbing past 420 by late July, according to Iran Human Rights and other monitors. Recently a gallows was erected in Isfahan’s public square. Many of these executions appear to be politically motivated, targeting participants in the January 2026 protests that challenged the regime.
In the real world, bonuses happen when you do a good job or your organization has a great year. In Ottawa, bonuses reward D- performances, bailouts and billion-dollar losses with taxpayers’ money.
