Since 1945, several pillars of Western life have been taken as given. First, that Western armies can more or less have their way with lesser powers and that guerrilla resistance is all they can expect to face. Second, that immigration means greater cultural diversity and therefore represents a net positive for the nations on the receiving end. Third, that nearly any country can become a liberal democracy, for it is a universal good that everyone aspires to and is capable of achieving.
Iran has stymied the United States for the moment, even though, by almost any conventional measure, it should be decisively defeated. The American people grudgingly believed their president when he said the conflict would be over quickly. Unfortunately, the enemy got their vote.
Let there be no mistake: Iran has not achieved any victory, much less a military one. It has suffered hundreds of billions in damage and a decimated pool of former leaders. Yet, like a punch-drunk fighter, it still stands. Don’t confuse defiance for victory, though.

It was a candid offhand remark that provided the lead to many news reports of Carney’s comments and is bound to have been noted in the White House. Firm action is good. Not signing a bad deal is good. Taunting a hair-trigger megalomaniac isn’t.

In a warm summer evening in late August 2024, a 26-year-old Syrian national named Issa al-Hasan carried out a mass stabbing at the ‘Festival of Diversity’ in Solingen, Germany, killing three people and injuring eight others.1 The attack took place in front of the main stage during a live performance by DJ Topic, who later revealed that security personnel had urged him to continue his set to prevent mass panic among the crowd. He kept playing for another 10–15 minutes, until the music was finally stopped. Eyewitnesses reported that al-Hasan, who had been in contact with an ISIS handler on Telegram the day before the attack, had shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ during the assault.2 One of his victims, Ines Wallusch, a 56-year-old pharmacist, bled to death in the arms of her husband after suffering a fatal stab wound to her carotid artery.
U.S. President Donald Trump is reviving his annexationist rhetoric after Canada walked away from a punishing prospective trade deal.
In his first comments since talks collapsed late Friday, triggering an escalation in Mr. Trump’s continental trade war, the President posted to Truth Social shortly after 1 a.m. on Sunday.
“Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!! They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!!” Mr. Trump wrote.

When a movie gets bad reviews and appears to be bombing at the box office, I will frequently rush out to see it while it is still in theaters. After all, I may never get another chance to see it on a big screen and I’m intrigued to see if it is truly as bad as its detractors claim.
