A little over two years ago, the federal government announced it would be “exploring options” for the purchase of a new submarine fleet. Last week, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the winning bid, for up to 12 diesel-electric submarines. He did so in advance of a visit to Ankara for the NATO leaders’ summit, where the deal between Canada and the German-Norwegian consortium TKMS was exhibit A in demonstrating our commitment to increased defence spending, a contentious issue for the Trump administration.

‘God is punishing the politicians’: anger at earthquake response grows in Venezuela

Public anger at what many perceive as the Venezuelan government’s botched response to twin earthquakes that killed nearly 4,500 people is growing, with one grieving mother caught on camera berating the son of former president Nicolás Maduro.

Maduro’s politician son received a hostile reception while visiting a semi-destroyed social housing project named after his father’s late mentor Hugo Chávez.

“I didn’t lose a kitchen! I lost a daughter!” the woman, named as Damely Yaneth Díaz, can be seen shouting at congressman Nicolás Maduro Guerra in scenes captured by the Norwegian broadcaster TV2 last week.

New poll shows Conservatives closing the gap on Carney’s Liberals

OTTAWA — The federal Liberal lead over the Conservatives has shrunk to six points, according to new polling.

In its weekly federal tracker poll, Liaison Strategies has the Mark Carney-led Liberals at 41% support among decided and leaning voters, with Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative Party of Canada in second at 35%.

Eventually the majority of Elbownians will realize that Carney is a gaslighting fraud like Trudeau.

Trump returns to war with Iran from ‘position of strength’, no tolls on Hormuz shipments

President Donald Trump is back at war with Iran after the fragile ceasefire crumbled last week, but the commander in chief might have more leverage to prosecute the conflict this time.

On Monday, the Trump administration announced that U.S. forces would once again blockade the Strait of Hormuz in an effort to choke off Iran‘s energy industry and thereby its economy. This decision followed the Treasury Department’s recent reimplementation of sanctions on Tehran, not to mention wave after wave of escalating strikes against hundreds of Iranian military targets in the strait, along the Iranian coast, and even on Iran’s oil launch point of Kharg Island.

Mexico to file criminal complaints over illegal alien invaders killed by ICE in US

Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Monday that Mexico would be filing criminal complaints in the US for the deaths of more than a dozen Mexican migrants in immigration detention and those killed in anti-migrant operations.

The deaths include last week’s killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, whom Sheinbaum said was “practically murdered”.

“It’s a case that sparks outrage among all Mexicans,” the Mexican president said during her morning news conference. “We cannot simply continue with diplomatic letters that have yielded no results.”

Last Tuesday, Canadian author, documentarian and activist Naomi Klein admitted on Bluesky that she “truly f—ked up” for not doing her “due diligence” on Graham Platner, who recently won the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination in Maine, before she praised him as an “ extraordinary political communicator ” in March.

Klein’s apology followed last Monday’s publication of Politico’s interview with Jenny Racicot, a 41-year-old woman who accused Platner of forcing her to have sex with him five years ago, after she objected.

But last Monday wasn’t the first time Platner’s sexual impropriety made the news.

Twelve arrested over threat to Islamic event

Twelve people have been arrested over an alleged right-wing terror threat to an Islamic event at a country estate in Suffolk, police said.

Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) said the UK Ijtima event at Shrubland Hall at Barham was ended early on Sunday as a precaution after the possible threat.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the response of the police in tackling a “credible threat” to the festival had “undoubtedly saved lives”.

That is precisely where Canada’s focus must remain.

For years, NATO measured commitment by the percentage of GDP devoted to defence. That benchmark still matters, but it is no longer sufficient. The true measure of national security is whether those dollars produce soldiers, ships, submarines, aircraft, armoured vehicles and ammunition that can fight. Capability deters aggression. Announcements do not.
