Barack Obama praised Zohran Mamdani in a private telephone call on Saturday, with just days to go before the New York City mayoral election.

The former US president described Mr Mamdani’s campaign as “impressive to watch” in the call and offered his services as a “sounding board”, according to The New York Times.

Abacus Data Poll: Tight Race Continues as Trump’s Trade Talk Cancellation Adds Tension Ahead of Budget

Between October 24 and 29, 2025, Abacus Data surveyed 2,922 Canadian adults about the current political climate. The findings suggest a political environment that remains remarkably stable despite several flashpoints, including Donald Trump’s abrupt withdrawal from trade talks with Canada and Pierre Poilievre’s controversial remarks about the RCMP’s handling of Liberal-linked investigations.

With the federal budget set to be tabled on November 4, and the U.S.–Canada relationship under deeper strain, Canadians appear attentive, divided, and bracing for uncertainty, but not yet shifting decisively in any political direction.

Berlin police arrest man for planning ‘jihadi’ attack

German authorities said a 22-year-old Syrian man was arrested in Berlin on Saturday on suspicion of preparing a “jihadi” attack.

The suspect was planning “a jihadi-motivated attack,” according to a spokesman for Berlin prosecutors. A unit of the police Special Task Force (SEK) had been deployed to take the man into custody.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the arrest showed “the terrorist threat in Germany, though often abstract, remains heightened.”

Off the track

Meddling politicians, a massive contract, multimillion-dollar lawsuits and a pandemic have turned the Eglinton Crosstown LRT into a 14-year project

For months, they have glided along the middle of Toronto’s Eglinton Avenue: Sleek, empty streetcars on test runs, stopping at platforms blocked off to the public. No one gets on or off. And before the two-car vehicle pulls away, its electronic chimes sound their pointless warnings as the doors close.

Here in Scarborough, on a strip lined with mall parking lots, cars and buses full of people – relegated to the road’s remaining traffic lanes – just roll on by as though the weed-choked rail line occupying the median isn’t there.

I think they should shoot for 20 years.

A 35-year-old man, who was arrested at the scene, has been released with no further action after it was reported “in good faith” that he had been involved in the attack. Officers later confirmed this was not the case.

Ahead of budget, Canadians want cost of living help, not deficits: poll

As the federal government prepares to release a budget expected to see major new investments and spending along with a higher deficit, Canadians say they’re most concerned about measures to reduce their cost of living, according to a new poll.

The Ipsos poll conducted exclusively for Global News found 42 per cent of respondents want the budget, set to be tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, to prioritize helping with the increasing cost of everyday expenses.

We can reliably count on the latter not the former.

Billion-dollar government deals with Stellantis, NextStar for EV battery plant revealed

Confidential government deals worth billions of dollars to help fund a Stellantis-backed electric vehicle battery plant in Windsor, Ont., carry dozens of conditions that, if violated, give federal officials the power to end the agreements and even force repayment in some cases, according to copies obtained by CBC Windsor.

It is unclear, however, if the contracts contain guarantees related to the company’s broader footprint in Canada, as elected officials have claimed. Some portions of the documents are redacted, so the full terms of the agreements are unknown.

BERNARDO: Saskatchewan’s line in the sand — Ottawa must pay full compensation for confiscated firearms

As most affected firearms owners already know, Ottawa placed a funding cap on its “voluntary” Firearms Confiscation Compensation Scheme, saying if you wait too long to surrender your guns, you’ll get nothing.

They’ve announced $742 million for compensation, but even federal officials acknowledge that this falls far short of full compensation for affected firearms owners.

New York Reruns: What Mamdani Means for New York

As the world waits for New York’s first Islamo-Communist mayor—hailed alike by the overtly malicious and the terminally stupefied—it may be worth stepping back to ask what the advent of Zohran Mamdani, the pampered 34-year-old rich kid who was born in Uganda, tells us about the decay of liberalism.

In many ways, Mamdani—who, as I write this, is a comfortable 10-15 points ahead in the polls—is just the latest avatar of the AOC-Ilhan Omar wing of the Democratic party. He loves talking about (re)distributing the wealth of others, defunding the police, arresting Benjamin Netanyahu, and penalizing “landlords,” which last is just one of his many code words for Jews.
