Germany has deported a Syrian criminal to his home country for the first time in more than a decade, marking the country’s first such return since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011.
The deportation took place on Tuesday, when the man was flown to Syria’s capital, Damascus, on a scheduled flight and handed over to local authorities, the Federal Ministry of the Interior in Berlin said. The Bild newspaper first reported the case.
Mourners turned on the chancellor, blaming his continued support for mass migration for the security failures that led to the deadly attack.
Friedrich Merz’s attendance over the weekend at a memorial service commemorating last year’s attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market was not greatly welcomed by attendees. Instead, the chancellor was met with loud protests—some telling him “we don’t want you here,” crying “shame on you,” and urging him to “get lost.”

A man, described in the German national press only as a 21-year-old Central Asian, was arrested in Magdeburg on Friday to prevent him from carrying out attacks against large crowds.
The timing and location are significant. Just a year ago, a Saudi psychiatrist and refugee who was known to German police drove a car into a crowded Magdeburg Christmas market during the city’s festivities, killing six people. It is for this reason that this year’s market quietly opened under tight security.
Police have arrested five men suspected of planning an attack on a Christmas market in Lower Bavaria. The Munich public prosecutor’s office confirmed this on Saturday evening.
According to the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office, three Moroccans aged 22, 28, and 30, an Egyptian (56), and a Syrian (37) were arrested on Friday. The five men are alleged to have planned an attack on a Christmas market near Dingolfing in Lower Bavaria. The tabloid newspaper ” Bild ” had previously reported on the case.

Since 2015, at least €12.2 billion has been spent on the accommodation and care of unaccompanied minor asylum seekers in Germany, according to exclusive figures obtained by AfD Member of Parliament René Springer. The actual sum is likely significantly higher, as several federal states have provided incomplete or missing data. Between 2015 and 2024, authorities registered nearly 190,000 unaccompanied foreign minors, known as UMAs.
Why German youth embrace violence and extremism
In 2023, a 15- and a 17-year-old plotted to attack a Christmas market in Leverkusen (North Rhine-Westphalia). In online chats, the two supporters of the “Islamic State” (IS), considered a terrorist organization by German domestic intelligence, plotted to kill as many people as possible by driving a truck into the crowd of revellers. Two days before the planned attack, the teenagers were arrested after police had become aware of their online chats. The minors were sentenced to four years in prison in 2024.
Cases like this are increasingly worrying German security authorities. The Federal Criminal Police (BKA) has for years been recording an increase in violent crime . The number of juvenile suspects under the age of 18 has increased by almost a third since 2019, and the number of suspects under the age of 14 has even risen by two-thirds in the same period.

The German city of Giessen saw huge disruption on Saturday as thousands of far-left protesters tried to block the AfD from launching its new youth wing—forcing the meeting to be delayed and triggering a major police operation across the city.
Extreme left-wing groups began arriving early in the morning, with police warning of coordinated attempts to obstruct access to the venue. One group, “Resist,” openly boasted that it had blocked several routes and claimed to have gathered 15,000 supporters. In total, 23 separate rallies had been registered, and authorities expected around 50,000 protesters to descend on the city.

New official figures expose the scale of Germany’s migration crisis: 934,553 foreign nationals with rejected asylum applications were living in the country as of October 31st, 2025. The numbers, released by the federal government in response to an Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) inquiry, show a renewed rise despite political promises to tighten control. In the summer of 2023, the figure stood at 896,065.
Germany is seeing another surge in violence against women committed by non-German suspects, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) has reported.
Presenting the findings on Thursday, Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) said the trend “has been solidifying for years.” The BKA registered almost 266,000 victims of domestic violence last year, including more than 187,000 women and girls. That represents a 3.8% rise on the previous year and a 17.8% increase compared with 2022.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the parties that claim to be the protectors of democracy—including the centrist CDU, the left-wing SPD, and the Greens—have ousted a democratically elected deputy mayor from office, simply because she represents the AfD.
Sabine Reinknecht was elected to this post in Bad Salzuflen exactly two weeks ago. This election was reversed today, on November 19th, following a city council meeting that saw the establishment groups team up against Germany’s rising opposition. “Democracy,” she said after the council vote, “was buried here today.”
She was democratically elected, has not done anything wrong but they exercised a clause which allows them to reverse a legitimate election result on a whim.
