Lifetime cost of military’s Cyclone choppers set to soar past $14B, government document reveals

The lifetime cost of buying, owning and operating the air force’s troubled CH-148 Cyclones is now expected to top $14.87 billion, according to a leaked internal Department of National Defence briefing document obtained by CBC News.

Most of the expense — $10 billion — is being attributed to the cost of sustaining the aircraft. The CH-148 Cyclone is unique; no other nation flies the maritime helicopter.

The estimate is contained in a spreadsheet in a submission sent to the federal Treasury Board in late 2021, when the Department of National Defence (DND) was seeking an additional $111 million to top up the program’s budget. The increase eventually was approved.

Trudeau pushes back after Netanyahu again rejects two-state solution

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau criticized Benjamin Netanyahu’s position on Palestinian statehood after the Israeli prime minister claimed in a nationally-televised news conference that the so-called “two-state solution” is dead.

“I was not surprised to hear Prime Minister Netanyahu share that. That has long been his position,” Trudeau said Thursday when asked about the comments at a press conference in Iqaluit.

“He and I had, just a few weeks ago, an extensive conversation on exactly this topic and others

I doubt Netanyahu thinks about Junior at all.

Israeli envoy joins calls for Canada to clarify its stance on ICJ genocide case

OTTAWA – Israel’s envoy to Canada is joining calls for the federal Liberals to clearly state Ottawa’s position as the International Court of Justice considers an allegation of genocide against Israel.

Iddo Moed says Canada should “leave no room for misinterpretation” on its stance, noting that many of Canada’s allies and peers have stated a clear position on the case.

The highest court of the United Nations held two days of public hearings last week as South Africa argued that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Tens of thousands of Ukrainians expected to come to Canada in the next few months

OTTAWA – Settlement agencies are preparing for a surge of Ukrainians arriving in Canada before emergency visas for those fleeing the Russian invasion expire at the end of March.

The federal government has issued more then 930,000 temporary emergency visas since March 2022 for Ukrainians who want to work or study in Canada while they wait out the war.

I have no problem with this, but cut off migrants from everywhere else.

Cost of Canadian Coast Guard patrol ships jumps by $500 million in less than a year, MPs told

The cost of a project to build two patrol ships for the Canadian Coast Guard has jumped by $500 million in less than a year, this newspaper has confirmed.

The project budget for the two Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships is now $2.1 billion, up from a previous estimate of $1.6 billion.

Craig Macartney, communications advisor for Fisheries and Oceans Canada, noted in an email that construction of the first of two new coast guard Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships, or AOPS, started in August at Irving shipbuilding in Halifax, N.S.

How is that possible?

Canada to ban funding for research linked to foreign universities, labs that pose risk to national security

OTTAWA — Canada will ban federal funding for research in “sensitive areas” done in affiliation with more than 100 entities the government deems pose a risk to national security, including foreign universities and institutions.

Canadian researchers will no longer be eligible to receive federal funding for technological research that is done in affiliation with, or with funding from, any of the newly listed entities.

I feel Justin will allow the China class to strip mine Canadian research.

Ukrainian officials say year-long delay in delivery of air defence promised by Canada has come with a high price

Too many Ukrainians have died in the year since Canada announced the “high-priority donation” of an advanced air-defence system to Ukraine that has yet to be delivered, the secretary of country’s National Security and Defence Council said Tuesday.

Oleksiy Danilov told The Globe and Mail that his own nephew, killed near the front line on Jan. 8, was among those who had died in the 53 weeks since Canada promised to purchase a US$406-million National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, or NASAMS, on Ukraine’s behalf. While the reasons for the delay may make sense in Ottawa, the wait for the U.S.-made equipment is harder to understand for those facing daily Russian missile attacks.
