Opinion: Journalists need protection from online hate

Canada’s news publishers, who employ 3,000 journalists from coast to coast to coast, believe that free speech, journalistic freedom and a strong, commercially viable and independent media ecosystem are all vital to our democracy.

Canadians rely on their newspapers and news media to be their trusted sources of information, helping them make informed choices and holding people and institutions accountable.

Great swaths of the anointed 3000 are on the government tit. That hardly speaks “independent press.”

Advocate of armed forces culture change learns the hard way

‘I have not done anything wrong’: Top military commander says he wants his job back

OTTAWA — Canada’s top military commander Admiral Art McDonald wants his job back, saying that he has “been exonerated,” and remains a “champion of culture change” within the Canadian Armed Forces.

McDonald is currently on leave as commander of the Canadian Armed Forces, but speaking to CTV National News’ Genevieve Beauchemin in an exclusive on-air interview about the misconduct allegation that sidelined his career, he makes his case for reinstatement.

MP David Amess dies after being stabbed at constituency surgery

He liked cats.

The Conservative MP Sir David Amess has died after he was stabbed several times during a surgery at his constituency in Essex.

Amess, 69, an MP since 1983 and who represented Southend West in Essex since 1997, was stabbed several times at a church in Leigh-on-Sea.

Essex police said a 25-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of murder. Officers were called to the scene at about 12.05pm on Friday, a statement said, adding: “We attended and found a man injured. He was treated by emergency services but, sadly, died at the scene.”

 

Hmmm no word on the perp yet – Sir David, a Brexiteer veteran MP who has voted against gay marriage and abortion, was seen laughing and speaking to people on the steps of the church just minutes before he was knifed.

Update: Mr Harrington said ‘it will be for investigators to determine whether this is a terrorist incident’, adding they will be ‘keeping an open mind’ over the motive. According to the Telegraph, the 25-year-old arrested was believed to be a ‘Somalian man’.

Afghanistan: Suicide attack kills 37 at Kandahar mosque during prayers

At least 37 people are dead and 70 more injured after three explosions tore through a Shia mosque during Friday prayers in the Afghan city of Kandahar.

Pictures from inside the Bibi Fatima mosque show shattered windows and bodies lying on the ground, while other worshippers try to help.

The BBC has been told it was a suicide bombing.

A local reporter quoted by Reuters news agency said eyewitnesses described three suicide attackers.

Tommy Robinson slapped with stalking order after appearing froth-mouthed at journalist’s home

Right-wing rabble-rouser Tommy Robinson, founder of the English Defense League, faces an anti-stalking order after showing up at a journalist’s house late at night “screaming” and demanding that she kill a story.

Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was given the ban in court on Wednesday. The court heard that he showed up at the home of The Independent journalist Lizzie Dearden late at night, “screaming and agitated” in his efforts to stop her from publishing an article about him.

Not a good year for Tommy. Pity to witness this.

I’ve never watched The View other than clips of notable segments offering a glimpse into the minds of female progressive media people. One such four-minute mini-discussion took place Tuesday that, I think, reveals that the gun-grabbers have lost the battle for control of the narrative on gun ownership. Gun ownership by Blacks is rapidly expanding in the wake of the George Floyd riots and the demonization of police that has led to a spike in violent crime in most major cities.

Like many a kiddy growing up in the 1960s, the release of a new James Bond film was a thrilling event. My cohort were too young to know about sex proper but the saucy suggestiveness of the Sean Connery films was the nearest we got to it. Once, a rumour went around our school that there was a kissing stand-in man employed on Bond films in order to get the lighting right rather than keep bothering the star with snogging various starlets; the careers officer became quite exasperated with the 16-year-old school-leavers he dealt with that year.

Chicago Police Union to Defy Vaccine Mandate and Dare the City to Enforce It

The first major test of a vaccine mandate applied to municipal employees will take place this weekend in Chicago, where up to half of the city’s police force is set to defy the mandate by failing to report their vaccine status.

Officers and other city employees who fail to report their vaccination status by Friday will “be placed in a non-disciplinary, no pay status,” according to the mayor’s office.

School equity leader out after racist and vulgar TikTok videos spread

A local school district’s equity team leader is no longer in her role after parents discovered her racist and vulgar TikTok videos. But the school has known about her conduct for months.

On her social media channel, Alicia Busch routinely attacks and mocks white people. She labels them “amoral colonizers” and explains she wants to make them uncomfortable. Though she threatens people with physical violence in some videos, she also says, “there is no safe place for BIPOC to exist when whiteness is present.” She also claims that the “American dream is white supremacy.”
