In 1965, Pierre Trudeau joined the Liberal Party of Canada, became a candidate, and won a Montreal seat in the federal election that year. Canada would never be the same.

His run as a Liberal came as a surprise for many people because until that time, Trudeau had openly identified as a socialist and supporter of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and its successor, the New Democratic Party (NDP). Trudeau’s political evolution and eventual membership in the Liberal Party are described by University of Winnipeg political scientist Allen Mills in his important 2016 book, Citizen Trudeau, 1944-1965: An Intellectual Biography.

China on May 20 towed a “floating structure” to Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. The Chinese termed it a temporary facility and claimed it was carrying out activities “including scientific research.”

The South China Sea Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences said it was using the platform for environmental monitoring and sampling and that it was supporting “ecological civilization development.”

Canadian Army battalion commander, chief warrant officer removed amid investigation

The officer commanding one of the Canadian Army’s leading regular force battalions and the unit’s top non-commissioned officer have been removed from their position.

Lt.-Col. Jason Hudson and Chief Warrant Officer Kim Doerr, of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, based in Edmonton, were apparently forced to step aside over the weekend, several military sources said Tuesday.

The Department of National Defence, in a written statement, confirmed to CBC News that action had taken place, but refused to explain why.

A jubilant Evaristo, 45, walked out of the Barrie courthouse a free man, with his arms raised, after being found not guilty on all charges due to what Justice Nancy Dawson described as an “unlawful arrest and detention” and subsequent illegal search of his pickup truck while he was suspected of drunk driving.

As a father, here is the sentence that keeps me up at night: If your seven-year-old is beaten at school and dares to defend themselves, the full weight of the system falls on them — while the child beating them is met, every time, with patience and endless second chances.

Years ago the TDSB disbanded a Zero-Tolerance for violence policy.

It was very successful, so successful the usual suspects labeled it racist.
