Apology sanction struck for former Alberta school trustee who compared Pride to Nazism

RED DEER — Alberta’s highest court has struck the decision by a Catholic school division requiring a trustee to publicly apologize for a social media post that compared children waving Pride flags to Nazi Germany.

The issue erupted in the summer of 2023 and led Monique LaGrange to resign from the board of Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools after fellow board members voted to disqualify her.

The social media post, which LaGrange later deleted, featured an image of children holding Pride flags in a classroom underneath an image of children waving swastikas, with the caption “brainwashing is brainwashing.”

She was in the right.

The policeman brother of the siblings caught on camera battling officers at Manchester Airport has been sacked for a ‘racist’ comment comparing a black female colleague’s braided hair to a mop.

PC Mohammed Abid, 29, is one of six serving officers based at Bury police station who were today dismissed for mocking the policewoman’s appearance or how she spoke.

A further two former constables would have faced dismissal had they not quit, a misconduct panel ruled, while a sergeant was given a written warning.

CHARLEBOIS: Ottawa cuts taxes at the pump, then adds them to the grocery bill

Ottawa’s decision to extend the federal fuel-tax suspension just days before a new round of counter-tariffs takes effect suggests that the government has finally done its homework on affordability.

The federal excise tax will remain suspended until January 31, 2027, saving motorists 10 cents per litre on gasoline and four cents per litre on diesel. It will return at half its normal rate for February and March before being fully restored in April. For the food sector, the diesel measure is particularly important. Almost everything Canadians eat spends time on a truck, while farmers, processors, wholesalers and retailers all depend heavily on energy.

EU’s ability to defend against invasion remains in doubt, finds official report

The EU’s ability to respond to a foreign invasion by 2030 remains in doubt due to a continuing reliance on the US and fragmented national defence systems, according to a report from its official auditor.

The European court of auditors (ECA) said the EU was much better prepared than before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine of 2022, but achieving its goal of defence readiness by the end of the decade would be difficult.

“Achieving defence preparedness in the EU by 2030 remains challenging,” said Marek Opioła, an ECA member who led the review of the EU’s defence policy published on Thursday. “There are still major difficulties such as fragmented national systems or industrial bottlenecks. We also still rely on the United States.”

But one politician-turned-pundit, U.S. Vice-President JD Vance, may have been on to something when he recently called Pierre Poilievre a “non-entity.”

In remarks made available to Canadian Press last month, Vance referred to the Conservative leader as “this guy Pierre Poilievre or something,” and told the fundraiser audience that he was a non-entity when it came to trade negotiations.

Lutnick says Canadian Liberals blew up trade deal ‘to get themselves elected’

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick accused Canada’s Liberal government of deliberately derailing the trade agreement with the Trump administration for political gain.

“This is the Canadian Liberal Party using their economy to get themselves elected, even if they’re selling their own citizens down the river. It’s sad and disappointing,” Lutnick told Bloomberg, speaking of the failed negotiations.

The reason it’s unrealistic for Canada to curtail or tax the flow of Canadian oil to the U.S. in retaliation for U.S. tariffs, is our lack of practical alternatives to sell it to any country other than the U.S.

This is one of the legacies of the previous Liberal government of Justin Trudeau and its failed climate change policies, which not only cost federal taxpayers more than $200-billion, but failed to achieve any of its promised greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.

UN tells Britain: Build statues of Africans to atone for slavery

UN experts have told Britain to build statues of African people to atone for the slave trade.

It is one of a series of measures proposed by lawyers, who have written a report for the organisation setting out what former slave-trading nations should do. The advice follows a vote in March, in which UN member states voted to demand reparations.

The legal experts said the UK should create public monuments that “honour the contributions of people of African descent”.

Start with the African slavers and then do the Muslim slavers.
