If Hamas disarmament plan holds, it could mark first credible step to ending Gaza war

After months of marathon talks, Hamas has, for the first time, accepted a framework of the Board of Peace’s plan to completely disarm in Gaza.

The plan provides for the inventorying and storage of its remaining heavy weapons under Palestinian supervision, potentially removing the most significant obstacle to advancing the Trump-backed peace initiative for Gaza.

The move comes soon after Hamas concluded leadership elections that brought Gaza-based leader Khalil al-Hayya to the head of the movement.

About 60,000 migrants arrive in Ceuta in 24 hours, Spanish territory’s leader says

About 60,000 migrants have crossed into Spain’s North African territory of Ceuta from Morocco in the last 24 hours, Ceuta’s president says.

At least 34 people have died during the crossing, Juan Jesús Vivas said during a news conference.

The influx comes after Spain’s Supreme Court ruled this month that migrants stopped at sea while trying to reach Ceuta or Melilla, another Spanish exclave, cannot be summarily returned to Morocco.

Ex-Liberal MP allegedly promised to pay back millions only if lenders didn’t complain to Law Society of Ontario

Former Liberal MP and lawyer Raj Grewal allegedly told lenders he’d only pay back money he owed them if they avoided complaining to Ontario’s legal regulator or the police about his allegedly fraudulent actions, according to the Law Society of Ontario.

The accusation is contained in written legal arguments the Law Society recently filed in a bid to have Grewal’s licence suspended and to prevent “a significant risk of harm to the public.”

Trump to demand BBC News chief testify in defamation suit

Donald Trump’s lawyers will try to force the head of BBC News to testify as part of the US president’s $10bn (£7.5bn) defamation lawsuit against the broadcaster.

Jonathan Munro, the interim chief executive of BBC News and Current Affairs, will be deposed about claims the programme defamed the US president by misleadingly editing together sections of a speech the US president made before the Jan 6 riots.

If Mr Munro does not cooperate voluntarily, Mr Trump’s lawyers could instead ask the US court to issue a formal request from the High Court in London, The Telegraph understands.

Tim Davie, the former director general who resigned over the scandal, is also expected to be asked to testify.

In June, Statistics Canada’s (StatCan) population estimate contained a stark warning that its data will see an unusually large revision. CIBC economists expect the revision will be large enough to reverse the reported declines and expose a new problem—Canada’s job numbers may be worse than reported, and there’s no longer an excuse for poor economic growth.

Apalachee High School shooter’s father sentenced to 15 years

WINDER, Ga. — A father who gifted his 14-year-old son an assault rifle that the teenager then used to unleash a mass shooting at a Georgia high school was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in prison.

A jury in March convicted Colin Gray on multiple charges, including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter, over the Christmas gift his son used in the Sept. 4, 2024, shooting at Apalachee High School.

FAO says Ontario deficits set to drag on for years as debt heads toward $550 billion

TORONTO — Ontario is looking at years of deficits and a big jump in debt, according to the province’s independent financial watchdog.

The Financial Accountability Office of Ontario’s 2025-26 Annual Report, released this week, highlights its Winter 2026 outlook showing the deficit climbing from $1.1 billion in 2024-25 to $11.1 billion this year. It is expected to hit $11.8 billion in 2026-27 before slowly easing to $6.3 billion by 2029-30.

76% of Canadians view the new Trump tariffs as a threat, but they are divided on how to respond: Leger poll

Awareness of the latest U.S. tariff threat is high among Canadians, according to a new Leger poll, but only 50 per cent support some level of tariff response.

Overall, 68 per cent of poll respondents are following Canada–U.S. trade developments closely, the new data suggest. More men (77 per cent) are doing so than women (59 per cent). Meanwhile, Canadians 55 and over are more engaged in the tariff news (79 per cent) than younger Canadians, 18-34 (59 per cent).
