Abacus Data Poll: Liberals and Conservatives Locked in Tight Race as Cost of Living Concerns Surge

Between September 26 and October 1, 2025, Abacus Data surveyed 1,504 Canadian adults on the state of federal politics. With Parliament back in session and economic anxieties simmering, this snapshot reveals a political landscape that is fiercely competitive and one where both major parties are digging in for a battle over economic credibility and leadership trust.

At the topline, little has shifted, but beneath the surface, rising pressure on affordability, mixed views of the Carney government, and some regional softness for both parties are shaping a dynamic fall political environment.

Europe is facing its ‘Pearl Harbor moment’

Vladimir Putin’s hybrid war is pushing Europe towards a deadly new “Pearl Harbour moment”, a former Lithuanian foreign minister has warned.

Gabrielius Landsbergis, who stepped down as the Baltic country’s most senior diplomat in November, said Nato was “doing nothing” in the face of brinkmanship by Russia, allowing Putin to drag the West closer to all-out conflict.

His warning follows a series of Russian provocations, including MiG-31 fighter jets breaching Estonian airspace and a drone barrage over Poland. As fighting continues in Ukraine, swarms of drones have caused mayhem at airports and spied on infrastructure as part of the Kremlin’s “shadow war”.

Pushed by Trump, Canada enters a new era of economic nationalism

As trade negotiations with the United States sputtered over the summer, Prime Minister Mark Carney started talking about a new, domestically oriented solution for Canada’s tariff-battered industries.

“We have the potential to become our own best customer for steel, but we will lose that ability if we don’t manage the profound transformation now under way in the industry,” Mr. Carney said from the floor of a metal fabrication plant in Hamilton in mid-July as he unveiled a bundle of measures to keep out foreign steel and boost domestic demand for Canadian mills.

A few weeks later, he announced a support package for the lumber industry. And in early September, he outlined the pillars of Ottawa’s new “comprehensive industrial strategy.”

Another Archbishop of Woke

Prior to Friday, the Church of England was without a leader for nearly a year. In the not-so-distant past, this would have been as unimaginable as the UK being without a prime minister. And yet, in a sign of the church’s growing moral and cultural irrelevance, the long absence of an Archbishop of Canterbury elicited little public commentary or concern.

WARMINGTON: ‘Resistance’ tag on City Hall more than art; was a protest

If you didn’t know any better, you might think Toronto City Hall was tagged Saturday night with a mocking message saying its working language is “foreign,” while using words in English like “resistance” and “revolution.”

Chicago a war zone over ICE raids, and Illinois’s governor doesn’t think there’s a problem

Chicago is awash in insurrection. ICE agents carrying out their duties are now surrounded by violent, Mexican-flag wielding protestors hurling rocks and bottles. They’ve been boxed in by cars, and chased by doxxers, one of whom was shot in a melee yesterday and may have actually been involved in the car attack. A few days earlier, one was knocked down and dragged by a car driven by a violent illegal running from the long arm of the law.

Does God exist? Modern science shows he must, bestseller argues

Science and religion have never been easy bedfellows. As Thomas Jefferson put it in 1820, priests “dread the advance of science as witches do the approach of daylight”. Five centuries of scientific breakthroughs — from Galileo to Darwin to Crick and Watson — have eroded our belief in the divine.

But now, according to a new book, a “great reversal” is under way. Science, its authors argue over 580 pages, has come full circle and “forcefully put the question of the existence of a creator God back on the table”.

Sad news.

Our longtime reader Dave Sanderson has passed away.

You may recall he was hospitalized last month due to a wonky heart.

Dave was an active friend to this blog, contributing not just his comments but numerous story tips over the years.

I consider Dave a friend even though we never met in real life.

I will miss his sense of humour, his insight and Dave just being Dave.

Over the years a number of friends of this blog have passed away.

I remind myself that we are blessed by such constant friends as Dave.

His obit may be viewed here, thanks to JF for bringing it to my attention.

Godspeed DS.

Portland PD Basically Tells Conservative Journalists Attacked by Antifa, ‘Your Skirt Was Too Short’

In late September, President Donald Trump ordered the Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to deploy National Guard troops to Portland to protect the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in the city. This ICE facility and its employees have been under siege, suffering a years-long campaign of violence by Antifa and other left-wing radical groups, and the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) has done little to quell the rabid unrest or to arrest and prosecute those facilitating it. However, PPB will allow conservative independent journalists who have documented this violence to be harassed, assaulted, and even arrested.
