Former Liberal transport minister Omar Alghabra is defending his inclusion on—and the mandate of—the government’s new anti-hate advisory council after renewed criticism over its perceived lack of urgency from opposition critics and American officials.

“If people have criticisms of the council, its function, or even [my membership], that’s fine, but to use slander and falsehoods … it’s beneath the office that they possess and the seriousness of the issue,” Alghabra said in an interview with The Hill Times last week, calling Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s (Battle River–Crowfoot, Alta.) allegation that he lobbied on behalf of a terrorist group “absurd … political gamesmanship.”

In College Sports, a Looming Collision Between Equity and Market Value

In April, Quinnipiac University announced that it was demoting its women’s varsity rugby program to club status while adding a men’s distance track team. A few weeks later, 23 current and incoming women’s rugby players sued. Quinnipiac’s move, they alleged, discriminated against female athletes in part by denying them equal access to revenue sharing and to NIL (name, image, and likeness) opportunities.

The Quinnipiac experience is a harbinger. The 2025 House v. NCAA settlement, which expanded NIL opportunities for athletes, has introduced elements of market justice into college sports. Title IX, as currently enforced, still demands proportionate parity in resources allocated between men’s and women’s sports. The House NIL settlement puts colleges on a collision course with Title’s IX’s reigning demand for engineered proportional outcomes.

Air force’s 1st new refuelling jet won’t be delivered until late 2027

Canada’s air force will have to wait until the end of next year before it receives the first of four new air tankers critical to refuelling fighter jets in the Arctic.

The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) has for the first time outlined the state of the CC-330 Husky fleet purchased to replace its aging Airbus 310s.

The wide-body jets are the backbone of the air force’s intercontinental fleet, flying troops and the prime minister around the globe.

Karoline Leavitt leaving White House press secretary job

WASHINGTON — White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt is departing her post at the end of August to spend more time with her family, President Trump announced.

Leavitt, 28, a mother of two and the youngest ever White House press secretary, gave birth to her second child, Viviana, in May and had officially just returned from maternity leave last month.

Trump, 80, hailed her as “one of my most trusted aides.”

London, Ont. explosives probe: 19 new charges laid against four accused

Nineteen more criminal charges have been added to the list of counts faced by four people arrested in connection with the north London gun-and-explosives investigation earlier this year.

A new, amended and lengthy list of charges was filed with the Ontario Court of Justice Tuesday, bringing the total to 31 separate counts. Some of the counts are joint charges against all four accused, while others pertain to specific people in the case.

Weird.

Afghan migrants ‘held woman down and raped her at knifepoint in London park’

A woman has broken down in tears as she told a court how she was raped at knifepoint by two Afghan migrants in a London park.

Noorullah Ahmdzai, 26, and a second teenage defendant whose name cannot be reported for legal reasons, allegedly attacked the woman on August 16, 2025.

The woman had been spending time with a male friend in Barking Park, east London, when they were approached by the pair.

These are the first charges laid in Saskatchewan under the Foreign Worker Recruitment and Immigration Services Act (FWRISA).

Dyan Jeny Enterprises, which operates as Guac Mexi Grill in Moose Jaw, pleaded guilty in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on Tuesday to charging Parth Patel an employment-related fee while he was a foreign worker.
