The Solstice of Our Discontent

I don’t recall exactly when it was that I learned that it took a bit more than eight minutes for the sun’s light to reach us here on Earth. Sometime before high school, I think. Anyway, that pedestrian fact made a deep impression on me. I knew that light traveled at a fixed speed and that its operation wasn’t (quite) instantaneous, although in our quotidian lives, it seemed almost so.

But the fact that the sunlight we see all about us is eight minutes old made a deep and disconcerting impression on my young self. Who knows what might have happened to the Sun in the meantime?

US fears China has obtained vital AI machine from Europe

The US has raised concerns that Dutch semiconductor giant ASML may have shipped an ultra-high-tech chip-making machine to China.

Howard Lutnick, the US commerce secretary, reportedly held several meetings with ASML executives in which he voiced fears that an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machine may have ended up in Chinese hands.

This would be a major violation of the US’s export control regime, which bans the transfer of ASML’s EUVs to restricted markets such as China.

The G7 Summit, held June 15-17, 2026, in Évian-les-Bains, France, brought together European leaders and President Trump in what looked like one big, happy family. Warm handshakes, smiles all around, and a generally positive atmosphere filled the room at the French lakeside resort. Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy showed up too, predictably pleading once again for more American money and weapons, apparently still hoping for the kind of open-ended blank check that defined the Biden years.

Trump alleged that at the recent G7 summit in France, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had “begged” him for a joint photograph. He said words to the effect of: “She begged me to take a picture with her. She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn’t have taken it, but I felt sorry for her.” He also suggested she was probably happy he even spoke to her.
