MONTREAL — One way Canada plans to shrink the number of temporary residents is to offer them the opportunity to remain permanently, the immigration minister said Friday, but that doesn’t mean everyone who wants to stay will be able to.
Marc Miller met with his provincial and territorial counterparts for the first time since he announced an unprecedented plan to set limits on the number of new temporary residents.
It seems rare when all three levels of government in Canada agree these days, but one such issue — at least in Brampton — is curbing so-called “diploma mill” colleges.
In January, federal Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Marc Miller announced a two-year cap on new student visas starting this fall. Miller said the decision was, at least in part, aimed at eradicating private post-secondary educational institutions he described as “the diploma equivalent of puppy mills” and “fly-by-night operations and backdoor entries into Canada” with dubious academic standards.

“Funding in 2026 will be conditional on provincial and municipal investments in permanent transitional housing solutions for asylum claimants,” the immigration department wrote the Senate national finance committee, as first covered by Blacklock’s Reporter.
For several months, the Washington rumor was that President Biden was going to come out with some strong executive orders to stop the southern border immigration catastrophe.
After denying it for three years, Mr. Biden finally came out and acknowledged that he has Presidential authority to do something about the border.
President Trump used that authority to develop programs such as “Remain in Mexico” and Title 42.
Canada’s foreign student push ‘mismatched’ job market, data shows
Canada’s recruitment of international students has tilted strongly toward filling spots in business programs, while doing little to meet the demand for workers in health care and the skilled trades, according to a CBC News analysis of federal data.
CBC obtained figures from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) showing the fields of education chosen by foreign students who received study permits from Ottawa to attend college or university in each year since 2018.
Experts say the figures demonstrate that neither federal nor provincial governments — nor Canadian colleges and universities themselves — focused international student recruitment squarely on filling the country’s most pressing labour needs.
There is no “Labour Shortage” there is a “Bodies needed to depress wages” crisis in Canada.
Dublin’s marchers have to convince a silent majority
The first thing that strikes you about Dublin is how different the political stickers on lamp posts are: while in Belfast the overriding theme is either pro-Palestine or Irish unity, in Dublin’s central O’Connell Street, it is “Defund The NGO Maggots” and “Mass Deportations Now” that strikes the foreign observer as novel. Beneath a gloomy Irish sky, one anti-immigration protestor scraped antifa stickers off a lamp post while a small boy holding his father’s hand stuck an “Ireland is Full” sticker on another. Others affixed tricolours and green harp flags to fishing rods as Gardaí in their day-glo uniforms looked on.
Europe has seen a sharp rise in the share of people who say that reducing immigration should be a top government priority, according to a study published Wednesday. Germany is topping the list.
At the same time, there was less desire to prioritize fighting climate change in the same countries, according to the survey commissioned by the Denmark-based Alliance of Democracies Foundation think tank.

The BBC has been told that it is not racist to air concerns about immigration in a review that found journalists are anxious about appearing “hostile” to migrants.
The review, commissioned by the BBC board and authored by Madeleine Sumption, the director of the Migration Observatory at Oxford University, looked at the impartiality and accuracy of the BBC’s coverage of migration.
It found no consistent bias towards Left or Right but identified “risks to impartiality that point in multiple directions”.
Doh.

Fines mounting for violations in Canada’s temporary foreign worker programs
The federal government penalized nearly 200 companies last year for violating the rules of its temporary foreign worker programs, resulting in record fines for infractions such as wage theft and abuse in the workplace.
Ottawa reached 194 decisions against non-compliant employers in 2023 and handed out $2.7-million in penalties, an average of $13,800 per decision, according to a Globe and Mail analysis of figures published by the government. Some employers have also been suspended from hiring temporary labour from outside the country.
But how else will they depress wages?
Former President Donald Trump has big plans for the raging border invasion that dominates the list of concerns voiced by a majority of American voters heading into the 2024 election. Trump has pledged to address the border invasion by initiating the “largest domestic deportation operation in American history.”
Trump’s proposal to “put the cartels out of business” involves using local law enforcement and the National Guard to remove the millions of foreigners leading what he called the “plunder, rape, slaughter and destruction of the American suburbs, cities and towns” from the U.S.
A university board in Sweden is suppressing research on immigrant income.
A new study of migrants to Sweden found something that will surprise no one: immigrants from some countries end up making significantly more money, on average, than immigrants from others.
Country of origin matters a lot, and it matters at least into the second generation.
Andreas Ek, a young professor at the University of Lund, reported earlier this year in the Journal of Political Economy that, if you ranked average incomes by country of origin, the average immigrant from a country at the 90th percentile earned three times as much as one who came from a country at the 10th percentile. In statistics jargon, that’s the “90/10 income ratio”—and a 3x wage difference is big. For reference, the 90/10 income ratio for IQ—a span of about 40 IQ points—predicts just a 1.5x to 2.2x wage difference.
Unions representing Conestoga College’s faculty and support staff are speaking out about the impact of the school’s rapid growth on those who work there.
They feel many of the international students aren’t ready for college and that’s compromising the school’s academic integrity, putting an unnecessary strain on staff, and clouding their reputation.
