The German car industry has warned of a potential collapse of employment in the sector in Europe unless society and workers accept that “bold decisions” are needed to address competition from the Chinese and other rivals.
Volkswagen is preparing to formally propose up to 100,000 job losses, a move that has triggered a wave of protests.

It is actually the name of a village in Luxembourg where the agreements were signed four decades ago that created an area of free movement for 450 million people across 29 countries. Today, however, the dream has become a nightmare. Illegal migration on a vast scale from outside the EU has forced 10 governments to adopt emergency measures to control their borders with other member states. They include France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Austria, Denmark and the Netherlands.
WASHINGTON—Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was planning to head to Brussels last month to deliver what would be a bombshell announcement in a meeting with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s top military chiefs.
The U.S., he planned to say, was preparing additional cuts to its forces in Europe that would go beyond the canceled deployment of an armored brigade to Poland and the earlier withdrawal of an infantry brigade from Romania, people familiar with the matter said. But Hegseth’s proposal was nixed after it was shared with Marco Rubio—President Trump’s national-security adviser—and other senior officials, the people said.

Campaigners behind the ‘Save Europe Act’ say the European Commission is preparing to reject their European Citizens’ Initiative after receiving a letter warning that its proposals appear to violate the European Union’s fundamental rights and values.

PARIS—Luca Funaro, a 32-year-old with a rare genetic illness, suffered through this month’s record-breaking heat wave in his apartment in the French capital without an air conditioning system. His neighbors won’t allow one.
They have refused his requests to install a unit in the courtyard of his building in the Marais, a bustling neighborhood in central Paris. They said the device would be too loud. Funaro, who relies on a wheelchair and breathes with a ventilator, has taken the neighbors to court, his family spending thousands of dollars on a legal battle that has lasted two years and counting.
“If it’s too hot, disabled people get dehydrated, and it’s difficult to breathe,” said Funaro.
Volkswagen is no longer facing a simple internal restructuring. The German group is considering a downsizing plan that could affect up to 100,000 jobs worldwide and lead to the closure of four plants in Germany—Hanover, Zwickau, Emden, and Neckarsulm (the latter associated with Audi) after previously reaching an agreement with unions to eliminate 50,000 jobs by 2030.
The figure places Germany’s largest industrial company in the midst of its most severe labour crisis in decades.
The American economy is leaving Europe behind. It is happening in real time, and nothing can stop it. America has chosen the future; Europe has chosen its own demise.
This is not just a slogan. It is the cold, hard truth visible in stack upon stack of economic statistics. The fact that Europe’s political leadership remains blind, deaf, and willfully ignorant of the economic decline of their continent is one of history’s many self-imposed tragedies.
It seems incredible that what could be described as a ‘he said / she said’ between US president Donald Trump and Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni has become an international incident. In the aftermath of Trump claiming Meloni ‘begged’ him for a photo at last week’s G7 summit in France (a claim categorically denied by the Italian PM), Italian foreign minister Antonio Tajani cancelled his scheduled meeting with US counterpart Marco Rubio next month. The rhetoric between the two countries has only escalated since, with Trump accusing Italy of being an ungrateful ally.
On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced in a meeting with NATO allies in Brussels that the Pentagon would begin a six-month review of U.S. military involvement in Europe. This review, he asserted, “will be designed to ensure that NATO is moving fast and irreversibly toward Europe leading, stepping up to take primary responsibility for the defence of Europe.”

The Associated Press reported, “France endured sizzling temperatures on Sunday, with trains, concerts and sports events canceled and authorities cracking down on drinking alcohol in public, as an exceptional heat wave unfurled across parts of Europe.”
The story also said, “Over the last four years, more than 200,000 people across Europe died from heat-related causes, and most of the fatalities were preventable, the World Health Organization’s Europe office said this month. More above-average temperatures are expected this summer, which can cause heat exhaustion and life-threatening heat stroke.”
Almost one quarter of European voters now back parties labelled “far-right” by a partisan research network that has repeatedly been criticised for weaponising the term.
According to a new report tracking election results across Europe, the share of voters supporting national conservative parties has increased nearly fivefold since the mid-1990s, with particularly rapid growth over the past three years.
