The national council of the Conservative Party has suspended elected Ontario councillor Bert Chen for two months for launching the petition to recall Erin O’Toole as party leader.
“Following complaints by grassroots members of the Conservative Party of Canada about the conduct of national councillor Bert Chen, national council exercised its authority under Article 8.13 of the party’s constitution to suspend Mr. Chen from national council for up to 60 days,” said Conservative Party president Robert Batherson in an emailed statement to The Hill Times.
‘Dangerous’: Chinese Conservatives Dismayed at Association’s Event Calling for O’Toole’s Resignation Over China Policy
Some members of the Conservative Party in the Chinese community are expressing concern about a public event held by the Chinese Canadian Conservative Association that described leader Erin O’Toole’s policy on confronting the Chinese regime as a “hatred message on China,” with critics saying it’s the same line pushed by Beijing’s propaganda.
On Oct. 7 Toronto, the Chinese Canadian Conservative Association (CCCA) held a public event demanding O’Toole’s resignation.
“Mr. O’Toole, your hatred message on China is dangerous as that would easily to be (sic) translated into ‘anti-Chinese’ message,” reads a news release in English handed out at the event, which was mainly attended by Chinese community press.
Perhaps it’s time for the Conservative party to part ways with Alberta. Sit down on the couch, engage in a frank discussion about the relationship, and agree that it’s no longer working out the way both parties had hoped. While they enjoyed many happy years as partners, the sad fact is that their interests have evolved in such a way that neither is getting the satisfaction they once did.
The Conservative Party’s infighting and ascendent rivals in the People’s Party and Maverick Party could be seen as a repeat of the 1990s when the Liberals ruled Canada over a divided political right. But some political scientists say there are additional factors that over time will influence the outcome this time around.
I don’t see the CPC abandoning its leftward course and they really should consider dropping conservative from the party name. The PPC is not a rival to the CPC, the LPC is.
OTTAWA — Conservative MP Michael Chong says the party is still studying the government’s new mandatory vaccine policy before taking a position on the issue.
In an interview on CTV’s Question Period airing Sunday, Chong said the measure, announced last week, which requires “core” federal public servants to attest to being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by Oct. 29, is vast and requires thorough review.
The defeated Conservative MP now tasked with determining where his party’s federal election campaign went wrong says he intends to “hit the ground running” within the week — and his work will include a review of leader Erin O’Toole’s campaign performance.
“I’ve already reached out to people within the party, outside the party. I’ve already started to arrange some interviews for next week and I intend to start travelling within the next couple of weeks,” James Cumming told CBC’s The House this week.

OTTAWA — At least for now, Erin O’Toole’s leadership of the Conservatives appears safe, despite the party’s election loss and the grumbling from some MPs that he’s taken the party too far to the left.
But at their first post-election caucus meeting on Tuesday, the 119 Conservative MPs did vote to give themselves the power to conduct their own review of O’Toole’s leadership if enough MPs request it — a power they had declined after the last two elections.

This is a big week for Erin O’Toole, and how he handles it will determine the future of the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC).
At noon on Tuesday, O’Toole’s top campaign advisors will give a presentation at a private conservative club in Toronto. The event is billed as a “post-election debrief,” where “campaign insiders… share their insights on the campaign and where the party goes from here.”
They will keep left reasoning more votes will be gained in eastern urban ridings than they lose in safe party strongholds.
Tory MPs should be wary of their first post-election meeting on Tuesday; to judge from an uncommonly self-serving email sent to supporters by Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole, they are being swarmed and hustled to confirm O’Toole as leader 15 days after he blew the election. Under Conservative MP Michael Chong’s Reform Act of 2014, when recognized parties where the chairperson of the caucus receives a request signed by at least 20 per cent of the party’s caucus asking for a leadership review, the caucus chair shall order that a secret ballot be taken promptly among all of that party’s MPs. If a majority vote to replace the leader, an interim leader is appointed until a formal leadership election is held.
