Ontario Premier Doug Ford says that U.S. President Donald Trump “remains relentless in his campaign to create a more unstable, unsafe and uncertain world.”
Ford made the comment during a news conference alongside auto sector leaders at Queen’s Park on Wednesday morning.
The comment comes after Trump delivered a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he reiterated his desire to take control of Greenland and warned Canada only “lives” because of the United States.
Reports that U.S. troops based in Alaska are being readied for deployment to the streets of Minneapolis amid a turbulent immigration crackdown there could put a Canadian officer in a sticky situation. Brig. Gen. Robert McBride is those soldiers’ deputy commanding officer.
McBride was seconded to the U.S. 11th Airborne Division in 2023, replacing another Canadian, Brig. Gen. Louis Lapointe, as deputy commanding general of operations.

Prime Minister Mark Carney turned some heads in Switzerland on Tuesday with his stark assessment of the current state of global affairs.
Speaking at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Carney said that not only is the old international order over and “not coming back” — but it had been a mirage all along.
“We knew the story of the international rules-based order was partially false. That the strongest would exempt themselves when convenient. That trade rules were enforced asymmetrically. And we knew that international law applied with varying rigour depending on the identity of the accused or the victim,” the prime minister said.

17 per cent of Americans support Canada becoming either a territory or the 51st State of the U.S. — but two-thirds stand by its sovereignty, a new poll suggests.
The findings come amid U.S. President Donald Trump‘s ambitions to seize Greenland, a self-governing territory of fellow NATO member Denmark, after capturing former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and toppling his government earlier this month.
But according to the survey by public opinion pollster Research Co., most respondents don’t want the U.S. to take over Greenland. Nor do they want Panama, Cuba or Mexico under American control.
Prime Minister Mark Carney did not misspeak in Beijing. He chose his words carefully, and therein lies a severe problem.
When a Canadian prime minister praises the idea of a “new world order” while sitting in China, he is not engaging in neutral diplomacy. He is endorsing language that carries an extremely specific meaning in Beijing and an unmistakable warning signal in Washington. For a country whose security and prosperity depend on solidarity with the United States, with whom it has had a historically challenging relationship, Carney’s comments carry significant risk, if not real damage.

With the ongoing trade war with the United States, frequent annexation rhetoric from U.S. President Donald Trump, and the potential for two separatist referendums at home, Prime Minister Mark Carney is facing some of the most serious challenges confronted by any prime minister. Food prices in Canada rose 6.2% year over year in December, with grocery store prices up 5.0% and restaurant prices jumping 8.5%. That alone would be troubling. What makes it more alarming is that inflation came in well above expectations, pushing Canada to its highest food inflation rate since August 2023.
