Donald Trump departs White House for last time as president

President Trump left the White House on Wednesday morning for the final time as president, describing the last four years as “the honor of a lifetime.”

Trump walked out of the White House to Marine One shortly after 8:10 am for the short ride to Joint-base Andrews where he will make farewell remarks before boarding Air Force One for the flight to his Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago.

The commander in chief, sporting his signature red tie, walked out of the executive residence holding hands with first lady Melania Trump who was wearing a black dress, large sunglasses, and heels.

Trump Announces Pardons and Commutations in Last Hours of Presidency

President Donald Trump announced late Tuesday night that he had pardoned and commuted the sentences of 143 people in the final hours of his presidency.

The president issued 73 pardons and 70 commutations.

The list included pop culture figures including rapper Lil Wayne, who was pardoned, and Kodak Black, whose sentence was commuted.

An NYU professor has been slammed for claiming in a Washington Post op-ed that black and Hispanic voters supported Trump because of something called ‘multiracial whiteness’ which separates them from their own race.

Cristina Beltran – who describes herself using the gender neutral term ‘Latinx’ – wrote last week that it was a surprise to see Latino and black faces among the MAGA mob that stormed the Capitol, and that it was also ‘unsettling’ that ‘a quarter to a third of Latino voters voted to re-elect Trump’.

She rationalized their preference for him with the idea of ‘multiracial whiteness’ which is the idea that white is more than a race or racial identity.

The Good News? Universities are doing a bang up job illustrating what a colossal waste of time and money they’ve become.

We have entered a new era of demonology. The hunt is on for heretics and witches who might be held responsible for our current predicament, for the plague of Covid. As in pre-modern times, sinful speakers and thinkers, those who dare to bristle against the political or scientific consensus, are being demonised and publicly shamed as assistants of the plague, as Covid’s willing helpers. They have ‘blood on their hands’, the lockdown fanatics cry, blissfully unaware of how similar they sound to those who in earlier times of disease would drag eccentrics to the stocks in the warped belief that those eccentrics either brought the plague or at least aided its spread.

For the last week at SteynOnline we have been mourning the death of our dear friend Kathy Shaidle, and, as sometimes happens along the way at such times, a certain song lodged in my brain. As our Saturday movie columnist, Kathy wrote a lot about one very particular star, including a piece she’d filed with a title I hadn’t quite registered before: “Bette Davis Lies.”

And so a song I hadn’t thought of in decades, and which I don’t believe I’ve heard this century, started playing on the rusting Sony Walkman in the back of my head.

Sensitive equipment being purchased by Global Affairs Canada without consultation with security experts: report

Government security experts aren’t usually consulted by Global Affairs Canada when that department purchases equipment, including sensitive gear needed to protect diplomats and embassies, a procurement review has found.

The September 2020 study was sparked by an article in the National Post about a Chinese firm that had been authorized to provide security equipment to the department. Procurement Canada selected Nuctech, which is closely tied to the Chinese military, for the $6.8 million standing offer that included the delivery, installation, operator training and software for X-ray machines for use at Canadian embassies around the world. The Chinese company was picked over a Canadian firm that had also bid.

Twitter Shares Fall Even More Following Trump Ban

Twitter shares—since President Donald Trump’s permanent ban—slid even more on Monday.

As of Monday at around 11:20 a.m. ET, the San Francisco-based company’s stock was trading at $44.96—dropping about 0.50 percent. Earlier in the day, shares were trading below $44.60.

On Jan. 6, during the Joint Session of Congress, the company’s shares were trading at $53.26. At this point, Twitter is down about 17 percent so far in 2021.

Police Investigate Improved Bernie Sanders Mural as Hate Crime

The vandalism of a mural of Bernie Sanders in Washington DC that was defaced with a picture of Pepe the Frog is being investigated as a hate crime, police have said.

D.C. police confirmed their investigation into the vandalism of the mural in the Navy Yard area.

They said that it was not clear exactly when the mural was defaced, with a police report listing December 15, 2020 to January 14, 2021 as a possible time period.

I’d say it was an improvement.

State Department Cuts Ties With Alleged Charity Islamic Relief Over Anti-Semitism

The State Department has cut ties with Islamic Relief Worldwide, an international charity that the United States accuses of spreading anti-Semitism. The public accusations represent a wholesale shift in how the United States approaches a global charity that was, until recently, an official partner of the American government and raked in hundreds of thousands in taxpayer dollars.

The State Department is “conducting a full review of the organization and U.S. government funding” due to the “anti-Semitism exhibited repeatedly by IRW’s leadership,” Ellie Cohanim, the deputy special envoy to monitor and combat anti-Semitism, told the Washington Free Beacon.
