Pierre Poilievre ‘could be vulnerable,’ pollster says, as support softens for frontrunner

Three weeks ago, Charles Vincent drove to a local hotel in Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Conseil, Que., to meet Pierre Poilievre. Vincent ended up buying a membership and even took a picture with the Ottawa-area MP, whom he first heard of during the trucker convoy last January.

But after this week’s French debate, Vincent isn’t so sure he will be voting for Poilievre.

Full disclosure I will likely be voting PPC.  Poilievre is fun but there is really no difference between the CPC & LPC.

Why Baltimore didn’t defund the police

Performative politics won’t help victims of crime

In Baltimore the protests that followed the death of George Floyd felt less like an eruption and more like a mellow reprisal of events that had taken place five years earlier. The death of Freddie Gray in police custody had sparked protests that ended in injuries to both protestors and police, mass arrests, widespread property damage, arson, and no significant policy changes. The 2020 protests, in contrast, were less spontaneous, largely directed by civic leaders, and far less violent. Out of their ashes emerged a young mayoral candidate named Brandon Scott, who was running on a progressive platform of public safety.

Stop telling Ukraine to give up

It is not the West’s place to demand that Ukraine cede territory to Russia.

The dynamic of the war in Ukraine appears to have shifted in Russia’s favour. After retreating from the outskirts of Kyiv in April, the Russian army has since refocused its efforts on taking swathes of eastern Ukraine. To that end, the Kremlin has poured thousands of troops and hardware into the Donbas region, laying siege to key cities in its two provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk. Ukrainian officials have admitted this week that Russia now has the ‘upper hand’ in the Donbas. Serhiy Haidai, governor of Luhansk, estimated that as little as five per cent of his province was still under Ukrainian control – down from about 10 per cent a week ago.

The green agenda is not about saving the planet, but gaining wealth and power

A FEW days ago we published Ben Pile’s alarming analysis of the true scale of the government’s net zero and green agenda on inflation and the cost of living crisis. Today we are republishing the film he made which illustrates and explains how misguided energy and climate policies have been contributing to this accelerating economic crisis for years.

The ADL Murder Report That Cried ‘White Supremacist’

In May 2021, two members of the Family Values, a white supremacist prison gang, allegedly killed a member of the rival Southwest Honkeys prison gang over a longstanding beef. Three months later, a New Jersey man who had vandalized synagogues and distributed neo-Nazi pamphlets strangled his wife.

On the surface, the crimes would appear to have little more in common than their brutality. But the Anti-Defamation League includes these murders by white men of other whites in its tally of right-wing and white supremacist murders in its report, “Murder & Extremism in the United States in 2021.”

“In 2021, white supremacists were responsible for more murders than any other type of extremist; in many years, they comprised an outright majority of the extremist murders that year,” the report said. “Indeed, over the past 10 years, white supremacists have committed 244 (55%) of the 443 killings that the ADL (COE) has documented.”

Germany has not sent promised large arms to Ukraine, leaked documents show

German broadsheet Welt says it has seen official papers that show Germany has not supplied any significant weapons to Ukraine for weeks

Germany has failed to provide any heavy weapons to Ukrainian forces in recent weeks and appears to be scaling back its military support in a break from Western policy, leaked documents have revealed.

German broadsheet Welt said it had seen official papers that showed Germany had not supplied any significant weapons to Ukraine since the end of March, despite vowing to grant its forces the weapons they need to repulse the Russian army.

In the nine weeks since the end of March Germany has made just two deliveries to Ukraine consisting of small arms.

In contrast with Western allies who are sending huge quantities of anti-tank and air defence weaponry such as NLAW launchers, as well as artillery, Germany has provided around 4,600 anti-tank mines.

BLM tax filings reveal co-founder family members received more money than Trayvon Martin Foundation

On Feb. 26, 2012, a 17-year old African-American was shot to death in Sanford, Florida, triggering a wave of civil rights activism. Armed with a can of pop and a bag of Skittles, Trayvon Martin was gunned down by George Zimmerman, a Neighbourhood Watch volunteer who claimed he felt threatened by the unarmed teenager. Following Zimmerman’s acquittal, thousands of Americans protested the injustice. Although social activism was already prominent in the African-American community, this event propelled it onto the world stage. From there, the Black Lives Matter movement was born.

Working with provinces to ban handguns a priority says Trudeau government

Tougher bail rules, sentences for gun violence in Canada ‘certainly an option’: minister

Justice Minister David Lametti says imposing tougher bail conditions and longer sentences for gun violence in Canada is “certainly an option” as the government eyes further reform to firearms laws.

At the same time, he suggested helping provinces and territories ban handguns remains a “top” priority.

André Pratte: The troubled states of America. Shall this union perish from the Earth?

Ten days ago, I climbed the long stairs towards Lincoln’s imposing statue, the Lincoln Memorial, in Washington, D.C. Once I had made it to the top, I was immediately struck by the silence, the calm that reigned around the monument, even though there were, as usual, many visitors. No one talked on the phone, no one yelled at a child, no one made remarks out loud. You could sense the respect that the tourists, mostly Americans, felt towards the great man. Indeed, as inscribed over the head of the marble statue, “in the hearts of the people (…) the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.”

Clashes in Jerusalem as Israeli nationalists march through Muslim Quarter

Some 70,000 people marched through the Old City of Jerusalem as part of the Jerusalem Day flag march on Sunday afternoon, hours after a record 2,600 Israelis visited the Temple Mount compound on Sunday morning.

Despite threats from Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and other groups in the Gaza Strip, no rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip despite scuffles that broke out between Israelis and Palestinians in the Old City throughout the day, with several lightly injured and close to two dozen arrested by Israel Police.

Much gnashing of Pallie Teeth
