‘Radical chic’ and the left’s problem with race

When it comes to race and the left – certainly the wealthy white left, definitely the middle-class left – it is as if left-wingers have not progressed since being unceremoniously exposed as a type by Tom Wolfe, in his mammoth essay, ‘Radical Chic’, over half a century ago. Other writers also had their number, including black authors James Baldwin and Ralph Ellison. The event Wolfe documents may not be familiar to a rising generation charting similar territory as chic revolutionaries on social media. It’s therefore worth providing a summary here. In the season of radical chic, as Wolfe refers to it, super-rich celebrities and socialites were indulging in a political cocktail of nostalgie de la boue and noblesse oblige, by staging fundraising parties – where sumptuous hors d’oeuvre were served – at New York duplexes on Park Avenue. Their pet causes were those raised by ethnic groups who were politicised – often rightfully so – by grievances that needed airing, axes that needed grinding.

In protests and politics, Canada’s ‘Freedom Convoy’ reverberates

COUTTS, Alberta/TORONTO (Reuters) – In late January five friends, just a few years out of high school, piled into a rented camper van and drove 37 hours in the Canadian winter from southern Alberta to Ottawa to join anti-government protests led by a convoy of truckers.

“We were worried about vaccine mandates and our freedom, and it all just going to hell,” said Ursula Allred, 22, from her small, rural hometown of Magrath.

Another member of the group, Justin Martin, excitedly phoned home to say the protest — which occupied Ottawa with tractor-trailers, hot tubs, bouncy castles and scattered symbols of hate for weeks until it was broken up by police — was “the best experience, ever,” said his mother, Lynette Atwood.

Canadian Jewish org slams St. John’s Israel ‘apartheid’ bus ads

New anti-Israel bus ads in St. John’s, Newfoundland were denounced by the head of a Canadian Jewish advocacy organization this week.

The ads, one of which was pictured on the back of a St. John’s bus, feature the phrase “The State of Israel practices apartheid.” They were sponsored by Solidarity With Palestine St. John’s and contain a list of NGOs that have alleged Israel is an “apartheid state,” including Human Rights Watch, B’Tselem, Yesh Din, Amnesty International and Independent Jewish Voices.

The push to label Israel an apartheid state is in full swing. You have to wonder who will seize upon such a label should it become “official.”

Showdown looms in Mykolaiv as Putin scrambles to save face

President Putin is desperately redeploying thousands of Russian troops to southern Ukraine to stave off a humiliating defeat, moving troops from the Donbas to bolster a force that has been split precariously across two banks of the wide Dnipro river.

The reinforcements bring the total Russian force in the area to more than 25,000 troops, a Ukrainian reconnaissance and intelligence team told The Times, adding that nine Russian battle groups, each between 500 and 800 men, had been moved there from Donbas and Crimea.

No, children aren’t being ‘ensnared’ by the far-Right

The Guardian keeps exaggerating the threat of online extremism

The late, great George Carlin has a legendary bit about ‘Airline Announcements’, a brilliant deconstruction of the absurdity and imprecision of modern language. “Please check around your immediate seating area for any personal belongings you might have brought on board”, he drawls, imitating the lifeless delivery of a flight attendant before cocking his head to the side in chummy defiance. “Well”, he winks. “I might have brought my arrowhead collection. I didn’t… so I’m not going to look for it! I’m going to look for things I brought. It would seem to enhance the likelihood of my finding something, wouldn’t you say?”

Revealed: How the Nazis spent their final days on board doomed U-boat

Hundreds of artefacts from submarine U534 have been unearthed, offering clues into the Germans’ activities in the Second World War

Historians in Birkenhead are hoping to uncover the mystery of why the U-boat U534 disobeyed orders to flee Germany in the dying days of the Second World War after unsealing hundreds of objects from the boat for the first time in 80 years.

They have opened dozens of boxes of artefacts found aboard the submarine, which is believed to have been scuttled by its crew after coming under attack from British aircraft off the coast of Denmark.

There are various theories as to what U534 was doing, including that it may have been carrying top-secret torpedo technology to Japan or even the US as part of a defection plan.
