When thinking about poor Austin Metcalf, I sometimes wonder about his reactions during those last fatal moments on April 2 of last year. When murderer Karmelo Anthony drew that knife, could he not, being young and athletic, have avoided at least a deadly strike? Perhaps Anthony was just too quick. But then I realize something:

The two boys were from vastly different worlds.

There is usually a very singular and overarching explanation from much of the British establishment when working-class communities express anger over such issues as immigration, crime or economic decline: they must have been manipulated into thinking that way. And when, after years of not having their voices heard, this anger bubbles up into rioting – never a good idea, never to be encouraged, but often understandable in its sentiment – the same explanation comes out again.

A woman who married a Pakistani migrant she met in Australia has been rescued after he allegedly kept her locked up and beat her daily for 12 years.

French national Sylvie Yasmina, 54, agreed to move to Pakistan with her husband – who is alleged to have been living in Australia illegally – but claims she was then put through more than a decade of hell.

She told police she was kept with their five children in an ‘extremely dilapidated room’ in the remote village of Bara.

I am trying very hard to feel sorry for this woman.
