Canadians hate being called the 51st state. But they don’t mind moving south of the border, study says

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Canadians may hate the idea of U.S. statehood, but some still see the grass as greener across the border. The question is why, and a new study says the answer is more complicated than tax envy or better jobs.

The data tell a mixed story: More Canadians seem to be heading to the U.S. in recent years, even as long-term permanent migration has declined. Nearly 20,000 Canadians emigrated to the U.S. permanently in 2022, a 65 per cent increase from the year before, according to Statistics Canada. But the average number of native-born Canadian-born people granted permanent U.S. residence fell from 15,600 in the late 2000s to nearly 11,000 in the late 2010s.

We can be such smug hypocrites when it comes to the USA.

Every day, thousands of Los Angelenos take a deep breath, step out of their houses, and plunge themselves into a transit experience straight out of Mad Max. The city’s buses have become rolling homeless shelters, replete with drugs and feces. Its trains are home to murder and mayhem. As Daquan, a daily rider who works near the North Hollywood station told us, “You could kill somebody down there and just get away with it.”

The people running LA are the same types running Toronto. This city will not get better. Ever.

Toronto is in the same death spiral we have observed in Democrat run cities throughout the USA.

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Mark Carney’s vision of middle powers working with less traditional partners outside the superpower club is already taking shape at the United Nations, says Canada’s ambassador.

“We have set up a number of different kinds of relationships that work for specific issues,” said David Lametti, Canada’s ambassador to the UN. “And that’s precisely the manner in which I think Prime Minister Carney has envisaged this, for areas outside of the UN.”

The UN is a cesspit, small wonder they’d like Carney’s con but then Lametti is such a sycophant he probably made the whole thing up.

‘They will attack me if I stay’: immigrants in South Africa flee for safety amid violence and anti-foreigner protests

South Africa was holding its breath on Tuesday as mass anti-immigration protests were held across the country. They come after a weeks-long campaign against foreigners that has seen at least four killed and tens of thousands fleeing for safety.

In the coastal city of Durban, where violence had been expected, the streets were unusually quiet and shops were shuttered as tension hung thick in the air.

There is more bad news coming for separatists in Alberta

When the Alberta government announced the makeup of what was to be an impartial panel examining the economic cost of independence, a couple of the names raised eyebrows.

Ted Morton would be taking part. The former provincial finance minister was a signatory to the infamous “firewall letter” that was published in 2001 and called for greater Alberta autonomy in Canada. Meantime, the panel was to be headed by Jack Mintz, a conservatively inclined economist who wrote a 2020 book with Mr. Morton (and Tom Flanagan) called Moment of Truth: How to Think About Alberta’s Future. In it, the authors said none favoured separation as a first option, “but we also see it as a viable last resort if all else fails.”

ANKARA/LONDON, July 2 (Reuters) – Canada is aiming to announce around 10 founding nations for a global defence bank at next week’s NATO summit in Turkey, ​the lead Canadian negotiator told Reuters on Thursday.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is promoting the Defence, Security and Resilience Bank (DSRB) as part of his call this year for an ‌alliance of “middle powers” to combat what he sees as the fracturing of the traditional U.S.-led world order.

Man convicted of murdering wife days after he arrived in Canada

A man has been convicted of second-degree murder for fatally stabbing his wife in Abbotsford, B.C., just days after he arrived in Canada.

Jagpreet Singh was charged in the death of 41-year-old Balwinder Kaur, his wife of more than 20 years, who was found suffering from multiple stab wounds in her basement suite on March 15, 2024.

While Singh did not dispute causing the fatal stab wounds, he argued that he should only be convicted of the lesser charge of manslaughter, telling the court he killed Kaur “in the heat of passion caused by sudden provocation.”

B.C. developers say they don’t want government buyout for empty condos

Real estate developers are pushing back against claims that a new federal-provincial program to buy up empty condos is something the industry asked for, with the Urban Development Institute and others saying that it isn’t a bailout and won’t help their sector.

Two weeks ago, Premier David Eby and Prime Minister Mark Carney said they are putting together a plan to buy more than 2,200 unsold local condos and provide them as affordable housing.
