Heavily accented voices rise and fall amid the chatter as attendees nibble on poppyseed cake and other Ukrainian delicacies. Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Pat McFadden, who addressed them, was jeered and booed. “I feel your pain,” he told the crowd. The reply was, “Action, no more words.”
When British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, a few days before the protest, visited Golders Green, a heavily Jewish area of London where two Jews had been stabbed on April 29, he was greeted with chants of “Keir Starmer, Jew Harmer.”

It does not feel as if the biggest sporting event on the planet is about to get underway in Canada. Blame staggering ticket prices, FIFA’s tyrannical resale rules and an unglamorous slate of matches in Toronto and Vancouver — Canada’s participation in three notwithstanding.
Thousands of tickets to the opening game in Toronto remain unsold, and not a single match in either city has sold out. This was predictable, given that top-tier tickets for Canada’s opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina start at $3,000, and those for other matches in both cities start around $600.
I love the game, played it all through my youth but I would never vote to let FIFA pick my pocket.
Toronto’s Grandees had the city’s bureaucrats literally sneak the World Cup in under the eyes of voters.

They invented new ways to produce things, inspired us with their poetry and philosophy. Our founding fathers (not “founding people”) are rightly venerated even to this day.
Regular readers know that this column has not been an inexhaustible source of flattering reflections on the Carney government. This makes it a particular pleasure to support a number of the prime minister’s initiatives last week. The tenor of his speech to the Economic Club of New York was a complete change from the antagonism of his confected Churchillian defiance in his election performance last year based on selling our gullible countrymen the canard that President Trump was on a personal vendetta “to break us.”

But in only about seven months, Prime Minister Mark Carney already managed to go over budget, twice.

Multicultural pride surges in Canada as the World Cup approaches
It was the kind of pitch-perfect evening amateur soccer players and their parents dream of all winter. Months of withering brutal weather gave way to soccer abandon on the turf, as two of Ottawa’s best junior teams clashed in the sunlight.
Watching on the sidelines was Nathaniel Salhani, a soccer-obsessed 8-year-old who could not wait to get the words out when asked if he was excited about Canada hosting the World Cup.
“I’m going to the Canada, Ireland soccer game!” he beamed.
Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has said he called US Vice-President JD Vance to tell him he was “wrong” in the comments he made about the murder of teenager Henry Nowak.
Vance blamed the death of the 18-year-old British student, who was fatally stabbed by Vickrum Digwa last year, on the “mass invasion of migrants” and said the “only response” was “righteous anger”.
Lammy told the BBC he had spoken to Vance on Saturday and told the vice-president the killing “has got nothing to do with mass migration”

This latest wave of Abacus Data’s federal political tracking finds the political environment becoming more competitive after several months of steadily improving conditions for Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal government.
Government approval has fallen noticeably from its record high. Carney’s personal ratings have softened. The Liberal lead over the Conservatives has narrowed. At the same time, Canadians have become less optimistic about the direction of the country, reversing some of the gains we have seen since Carney became Prime Minister.
Even the Elbow Zombies will wake up and smell the ersatz coffee eventually.
