While California is the fifth-largest economy in the world, its days of being a business haven have long passed. More and more, companies big and small are forced to either shut down or move to a more business-friendly state. Take, for instance, the departure of Fortune 1000 companies like Tesla, Oracle, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, or a recent survey of CEOs ranking California as the worst state in which to do business. Things have gotten so bad that even providers of critical municipal services have been forced to stop doing business in the state. And in Los Angeles, the city may soon become a giant Skid Row, a dumping ground in every way.

The UK must heed Mark Carney’s EU red-carpet embrace

Mark Carney is back in the news as the ubiquitous champion of the old, rules-based international order.

Building on a speech he made in Davos earlier this year to the effect that “middle” powers should huddle together for warmth in an era dominated by superpower rivalry, he sought this week to further cosy up to the EU as an alternative to increasingly hostile relations with Trump’s America.

It’s fair to say that the Canadian prime minister’s speech to the European parliament was more important for its political signalling than its real-world economic significance. Ever since Trump made Canada the butt end of his war on international trade, Carney has ridden a wave of offended Canadian patriotism.

Tokhi’s goal is to obtain the car keys belonging to a $140,000 BMW parked in a Toronto driveway. He will do this 10 times over a span of two months. When he is caught, he will be released on bail, then allegedly go back to stealing cars. The vehicles he and his crew take are worth between $80,000 and $200,000.

Sounds like bad immigration policy.

A diminutive wild cat that inhabits Bolivia’s ⁠cloud forest has been identified as a previously unknown species, marking the first time a new living feline species has been formally named and described in more than a century.

The cat, called tilcayo by local communities, is part of a group called tiger ⁠cats found across much of South ⁠America. It was found in Bolivia’s ​lush Yungas forest, a mountainous region where forests are often covered by clouds and surrounded by high humidity, according to researchers. It measures about 18in (46cm) long and weighs about 3lb (1.4kg), making it smaller than the average domestic ⁠cat.

By now it is abundantly clear that the time for elbows up is over. Most of us have a schoolyard sense of justice, and we desperately want a bully to get his due. But those feelings have a time and place. Now is the time for more serious responses.

The bully is certainly a pest, but he is not our responsibility, and we will not influence whatever justice awaits him. The challenges we can and will meet are of our own creation. It’s time to put the elbows down and get our heads up.

Canada is long zombified by a kneejerk hatred for America.
