‘Systemic’: Students speak out about antisemitism on Canadian campuses

OTTAWA – Alexa Barett-Taller says she experienced a number of antisemitic incidents during her time at Ottawa’s Carleton University, but one stands out in particular – as it involved her professor.

“The professor actually decided to explicitly say that the Jewish people were to blame for Oct. 7,” Barett-Taller said in an interview with CTV News.

This was in the aftermath of the 2023 massacre of Jews by Hamas, and Barett-Taller says she had specifically approached her professor ahead of the class to ask that the topic be discussed with “care and nuance.” She felt her concerns were never heard.

An Ontario man who pimped out an 18-year-old and then later impregnated her was recently sentenced to one additional day in jail on top of what he’d already served.

The 47-year-old man pled guilty in Ontario’s Superior Court of Justice to procuring her to offer sexual services between April 2015 and March 2018, and obtaining a material benefit knowing it was a crime. A ban has been placed on publication of information that would identify the victim.

It has been a summer of thwarted celebrations.

Marquee street festivals in Toronto were cut short, moved out of the city or cancelled outright over issues with financing, space, violence and thefts.

Some organizers say growing security costs and concerns since the deadly vehicle attack in Vancouver last year and shootings at Salsa on St. Clair last month made their events too expensive to host. This was worsened, they say, by the World Cup siphoning away corporate sponsorship money this year, forcing local events to make do with less. Even Taste of the Danforth, one of the city’s most storied, well-funded festivals, had supporters petition the federal government this week for more help with payments.

US accused of meddling in British politics with $500,000 grant for ‘public education’ courses

The US embassy in London is offering grants of up to half a million dollars for new “public education” programmes in what has been criticised as interference in British domestic politics.

Using language that the pro-Trump Maga movement has sought to appropriate, a funding notice identifies a goal of fostering a “national conversation” about “shared civilizational values” underpinning US-UK ties. Priority will go to applicants aiming to celebrate “freedom of speech” and “limited government”.

It comes after senior Trump officials voiced sharp criticism of British authorities and repeated misinformation on a range of fronts including abortion and digital regulation, and allied with European far-right movements in attacks on hate speech and immigration policies.

Great Britain needs foreign interference.
