Canadian mandates on race-based hiring quotas in academia have done measurable damage to the country’s research productivity, according to a new report by the Macdonald-Laurier Institute.
Ever since 2017, Canadian universities have been subject to strict identity-based hiring quotas as a condition of receiving federal research funding.
Canada’s growing confrontation with the United States is about much more than just tariffs. Trade imbalances, Chinese goods entering the American market through Canada, taxes on U.S. companies, and Mark Carney’s political strategy have pushed relations with Washington to a new low.
At the same time, Canada faces weak economic growth, enormous immigration pressures, separatist movements in Alberta and Quebec, and continued dependence on the United States for its defense. Picking a fight with America will not solve those problems.

Pierre Poilievre desperately needs some sort of victory, and the recent round of Canadian by-elections didn’t garner him one. Nobody really expected the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) to make gains in the races, but they could have hoped to remain competitive in the one seat they had held in Quebec. Alas, not only did they lose the seat, but they were trounced. The CPC candidate in Chicoutimi — Le Fjord finished a distant third with under 13% of the vote.
In the other two by-elections, the CPC fared no better.
The German government said on Tuesday that it held Russia “responsible” for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4.

Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic US Senate candidate in Michigan, has hit back at Republican vice-president JD Vance’s onslaught against him, saying it is “evil” to deprive people of healthcare and affordable groceries.

A homeless immigrant man will continue to receive benefits and not be asked to find a job by the Ennepe-Ruhr district job center in Germany, as the office says the man is dangerous and should not be “provoked.”
The man in question is Amer G., a Syrian asylum seeker who reportedly arrived in Germany in 2015 and has become known in Witten for publicly reciting verses from the Quran using a loudspeaker.
Former banker Doug Guzman is expected to depart as head of the federal government’s newly created Defence Investment Agency after only a year on the job, two sources say.
The sources told The Globe and Mail that Mr. Guzman is frustrated by the slow pace of government bureaucracy in getting defence procurement projects moving and approved.
Mr. Guzman was an important player in the July decision to purchase 12 conventionally powered submarines from German company TKMS for the Royal Canadian Navy, one source said, and has demanded quicker action on procurement files during his tenure.
The LPC strategy is to wait out Trump and then resume Canada’s deadbeat on defence status.
