Much of this week and next week will see Conservative Party partisans gathering in Calgary at the party convention and in Ottawa to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Stephen Harper’s election and swearing-in as Canada’s 22nd prime minister.
These will be two weeks for Canada’s conservative movement, filled with reflections on past successes and examining today’s challenges. Much of the discussion will revolve around the lessons that can be learned from the successes of the Harper victory of 20 years ago and what can be ported forward to 2026, as conservatives aspire to earn the privilege of governing Canada again.

Mexico has cancelled a shipment of oil to Cuba, the country’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, appeared to confirm on Tuesday, but she insisted the decision was “sovereign” and not a response to pressure from the US.
Fuel shortages are causing increasingly severe blackouts in Cuba, and Mexico has been the island’s biggest oil supplier since the US blocked shipments from Venezuela last month.
On Monday, Bloomberg reported that Pemex, Mexico’s state oil company, had “backtracked” on plans to send a much-needed delivery to Cuba this month.

In his “rupture” speech delivered at the 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney lamented the (apparent) breakdown of the rules-based international order and praised a “new world order” to come. He repeated former Czech president Václav Havel’s admonition against “living in the lie.” The irony was obvious as he proceeded to articulate, as James Albers writes in the Western Standard, “an address saturated with contradictions, misdirection, and half-truths.” In effect, he transformed Havel’s anti-communist warning into what amounts to a pro-communist exhortation.

Sweden is moving forward with plans to lower the age of criminal responsibility from 15 to 13 in serious cases as it grapples with a growing number of children recruited into gangs to carry out violent crimes without facing serious legal repercussions.
Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer said the country was in an “emergency situation” and stopping the use of children in criminal networks was a “crucial task” for the government.
But several authorities, including police, prison officials and prosecutors, have opposed the plan, with some worried that it may lead to even younger children becoming offenders.

Canada was once a great country. For its first hundred years or so, Canada was known for exceptional national projects — railways, pipelines, mining, etc. — and for punching above its weight in international conflicts.
But since the 1960s, it has changed. Liberal leaders decided to remake Canada into a different kind of country, one that prioritized leftist social engineering over the country’s historic identity and achievements.

The White House has told Ukraine it must cede the Donbas before the US will provide security guarantees, according to reports.
Ukrainian, US and Russian negotiators met for their first three-way peace talks in the United Arab Emirates last week.
Russia has increased the tempo of its airstrikes in recent days, knocking out power for large parts of Ukraine and leaving much of the country to freeze in sub-zero temperatures.

First, American forces would strike with poison gas munitions, seizing a strategically valuable port city. Soldiers would sever undersea cables, destroy bridges and rail lines to paralyze infrastructure. Major cities on the shores of lakes and rivers would be captured in order to blunt any civilian resistance.
The multipronged invasion would rely on ground forces, amphibious landing and then mass internments. According to the architects of the plan, the attack would be short-lived and the besieged country would fall within days.
The target was Canada, part of a classified 1930 strategy – War Plan Red – for a hypothetical war with Great Britain where the US would seek to deny it any foothold in North America.
Iranian security forces shot dead a teenage motorcycle influencer who posted videos of herself online without a headscarf, human rights groups have reported.

She was reportedly shot twice with live ammunition around midnight, and her body was returned to her family two days later, the Hyrcani Human Rights group reported.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he has “nothing to do with” a contract held by a Brampton-based defence manufacturer to supply U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with armoured vehicles.
Ford made the comment during a news conference on Tuesday morning after he was asked about criticism of the deal between Roshel and the U.S. government.
His response came after NDP Leader Marit Stiles released a statement “calling for an end” to Ontario manufacturing contracts with ICE in the wake of the shooting of two U.S. citizens in Minnesota this month.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) was accosted and sprayed with an unknown substance Tuesday by a man who rushed the stage with a syringe at a chaotic town hall event in Minnesota.
Omar was at the podium criticizing Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and calling for abolishing ICE when Anthony Kazmierczak – shouting inaudible remarks – allegedly charged her from the row closest to her lectern and sprayed liquid in the direction of her chest.
Amber coloured? Could be urine.
99.9% staged.

Man sprays mystery substance on her. He’s in the front row.
She doesn’t run, or wipe it away, or react at all really.
She runs towards him.
Only thing missing is the man wasn’t wearing a MAGA hat.
