I imagine Mark Carney was something of an autocrat even in the cradle, issuing directives and insulting subordinates from the earliest age. “Yeah, I’m not feeling this WubbaNub. Got any others?” “This is not a helpful suggestion. Go back and rework it to a different nap time.”
Certainly his has been a lifetime spent in preparation for, or the active enjoyment of, executive power: Harvard. Oxford. Goldman Sachs. As governor of the Bank of Canada, he would have been used to making all the final decisions, in consultation with a small group of senior advisers.
The Associated Press reported, “France endured sizzling temperatures on Sunday, with trains, concerts and sports events canceled and authorities cracking down on drinking alcohol in public, as an exceptional heat wave unfurled across parts of Europe.”
The story also said, “Over the last four years, more than 200,000 people across Europe died from heat-related causes, and most of the fatalities were preventable, the World Health Organization’s Europe office said this month. More above-average temperatures are expected this summer, which can cause heat exhaustion and life-threatening heat stroke.”
On July 1, Canada, the United States and Mexico begin the first formal review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). Magdeburg’s Regional Court has found a 51-year-old psychiatrist from Saudi Arabia guilty of murder for driving a rental car into a crowd at the Christmas market in the eastern city in 2024.
The judge sentenced Taleb Jawad al-Abdulmohsen to life in prison and said that the German equivalent of a first-degree murder charge in the US — known in German as particular severity of guilt — had been established. This makes the possibilty of early parole less likely.
The verdict can still be appealed.
RCMP say they’ve arrested an Ottawa man who’s believed to have resided in Canada for 30 years under a false identity, and who is wanted in Rwanda for his alleged role in that country’s 1994 genocide.
The Mounties said the 68-year-old man was arrested Monday after returning to Canada from abroad. Investigators also executed a search warrant at the man’s home to seize documents and electronic devices.
They’ve been working on this since 2021.

According to data compiled for the Greater Toronto Hotel Association, the percentage of GTA hotel rooms occupied during the first two weeks of the world’s biggest sporting event is down substantially compared to the same period last year, raising questions about the economic value of hosting.
In the week ending June 13 — which included Canada’s tournament opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina — the overall occupancy rate for area hotels dipped to 82 per cent, down from 83 per cent in the same period last year.

Premier Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservatives remain the most popular party at Queen’s Park even though seven out of 10 Ontarians think it’s time for a change in government, a new poll suggests.
The Abacus Data survey found Ford’s Tories at 41 per cent support, while the Liberals, who elect a new leader Nov. 21, were at 32 per cent. Marit Stiles’s New Democrats, the Official Opposition, were at 19 per cent and Mike Schreiner’s Greens were at five per cent.
But 52 per cent of those polled said it was “definitely time for a change in government in Ontario,” with 18 per cent saying “it would be nice to change the government, but it’s not that important to me.”
Probably why Ford went anti-TFW all of a sudden.
