Canada barely checks cargo leaving its Pacific ports, a gap a new report says traffickers exploit to ship methamphetamine to Australia by the tonne.
The paper, released by the Frontier Centre for Public Policy, argues that Vancouver and Prince Rupert move enormous volumes of cargo with little of it meaningfully checked and that no single agency is responsible for closing the gap.
Dowry deaths in India no longer provoke the public anger they once did, despite thousands of women’s lives still being lost every year, according to new research.
The killings – women who are murdered or driven to suicide following dowry disputes between families – have also faded from political debate, despite an increase in cases.
In 2022, there were 6,516 dowry deaths in India compared with 1,841 in 1988, according to the paper.
Last week, Alberta’s top court ruled that a deaf man who never learned to communicate can’t be tried for sex crimes, or even assessed for mental fitness to stand trial, because it would violate his Charter rights. This means the man is functionally exempt from the Criminal Code, and is thus free to rape and even murder if he so wishes.
