WASHINGTON, D.C. — Many Haitians in the United States, having fled environmental disasters, political upheaval, and gang violence at home, are living in fear again, this time in their adopted country.
Nearly 300,000 Haitians have had Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a relief program established by former U.S. president Barack Obama that provided work authorization, protection from deportation and travel documentation to eligible foreigners whose home countries were deemed unsafe.
It has been more than five months since Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei booked a well-deserved passage to hell, courtesy of a US-Israeli airstrike in Tehran.

After Mark Carney’s Liberals won the 2025 election, the federal government increased CBC’s budget by $150 million, in part to help “combat disinformation.” Given that the Liberals secured a majority in 2026 amid the Conservatives’ struggles in the polls, the threat of a defunded CBC now seems remote.
Aside from a few missteps—most notably an aborted CBC-funded prank show that sought to publicly humiliate retired RCMP officers—the public broadcaster has generated relatively few headlines of its own over the last year. As other newsrooms shutter, the Mother Corp lumbers on, content to rest on its laurels.

Man bites dog dep’t: Last Thursday the National Magazine of the Canadian Bar Association published an op-ed praising the Ontario Court of Appeal for an act of rock-solid common sense . A couple of weeks ago, the court overturned some Superior Court acquittals for Freedom Convoy organizer Pat King, who had been successfully convicted on mischief and other charges related to the 2022 trucker protests that besieged parts of Ottawa. But the judge trying King, the Hon. Charles Hackland, had declined to convict King on three charges related to the Criminal Code offence of “intimidation,” which can carry a sentence of up to five years’ imprisonment.

The United States is confronting tough choices over Iran, with an array of unattractive options to address Iran’s tactics and strategy. Iran lacks sufficient incentive to negotiate — the current Iranian negotiators appear to accept the degradation of its military-industrial complex, destruction of its conventional navy and air force, decapitation of echelons of leadership, strangulation of its economy, and the world’s opprobrium over the murder of tens of thousands of its own citizens. Not even an offer of $300 billion for economic development, plus releasing $100 billion of blocked funds worldwide are inducement to talk seriously.

OTTAWA – Within the span of a few days last week, on opposite sides of the world, two democracies revealed how differently they answer the same threat.
In Taipei, the Supreme Court handed down back-to-back rulings upholding prison sentences for two political candidates convicted of taking Beijing’s money to subvert Taiwan’s elections. In Brussels, a Canadian woman of Chinese origin — an intern inside the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s military command — stood behind closed doors as a pre-trial chamber weighed espionage allegations.
Of all Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s initiatives, his proposal to build five “affordable, well-run, city-owned grocery stores” to address high food costs is probably the most novel and puzzling. New York City will invest tens of millions of dollars to build brand-new supermarkets across the five boroughs and bid out the right to manage these franchises. In exchange for paying no rent, the store operators must agree to sell a basket of staples at 30 percent below the average retail price. Such a plan, if enacted, would use taxpayer dollars to undercut neighborhood grocery stores while doing little to reduce food prices.
Carney looks to influential outsiders to head Canada’s embassy in Beijing, sources say
Martin Cauchon, a vice-chair of the Canada China Business Council lobby group and former Liberal cabinet minister, is under consideration to be Ottawa’s envoy to China as both countries work to mend fractured diplomatic and economic ties, three sources say.
Mr. Cauchon, a justice minister in Jean Chrétien’s government, has a long history of developing close business ties with China. Prime Minister Mark Carney is seeking a business-friendly relationship with Beijing as he looks to diversify trade away from the United States. He has set out to double non-U.S. exports globally over the next decade.
