Shoppers point to chicken as bone of contention amid food inflation

For those searching for savings at the grocery store, many are finding out that there’s no safe place to take cover from sky-high food costs.

“The problem in recent years is all categories (of groceries) are going up in price, all at once,” said Sylvain Charlebois, Agri-Food lab director at Dalhousie University.

One shopper outside a Toronto-area Loblaw Grocery store shared with CTV News that in years past, her weekly grocery bill was around $80, but it now falls between $150 and $200.

Russia’s Shadow War: A Warning for the West

Deliberate drone incursions into sovereign NATO airspace. Suspicious damage to undersea cables. Calculated attacks that test the West’s cybersecurity. All these actions by Russia have just been a prelude to the latest effort to intimidate the West from aiding the embattled Ukrainian nation.

Of late there has also been a deliberate effort to sabotage the Polish railway system. No surprise: the gateway had become a crucial gateway for sending military aid to Ukraine. That attack signals Russia’s willingness to escalate warfare beyond Ukraine’s borders and into NATO territory. This “anonymous” incident, however, reveals an extremely calculated strategy to intimidate European nations while Russia maintains plausible deniability.

Roughly 500,000 Canadians left ERs before seeing a doctor last year, data shows

About a half a million Canadians left emergency departments before being seen by a doctor in 2024, according to a data analysis by CBC’s Marketplace.

And because B.C. and Quebec report these figures based on the fiscal calendar (and include parts of 2025), that number is likely a lot higher.

The 2024 statistics collected from most provinces and territories show Prince Edward Island had the highest percentage of people leaving, at roughly 14 per cent.

Trump’s Use of National Guard Has Been Successful–and Welcome

It is now indisputable that President Trump’s use of the National Guard to reinforce local law enforcement and crime-ridden cities is successful and welcome when applied.

The rabidly partisan Democratic mayor of Washington, Muriel Bowser, had opposed the introduction of the National Guard but after the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department disclosed that violent crime had fallen by half during this period and even relatively minor offenses such as evasion fares on the subway system were practically eliminated.

Colombian president: I’m no narco, I just like Gucci and strip clubs

If the window to a man’s character is his credit card statement then Colombia’s president has some explaining to do.

Gustavo Petro, the left-wing leader and a fiery critic of the excesses of consumerism, appears to have a penchant for Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Prada, and the occasional strip club.

This startling revelation emerged earlier this week, after the president decided to fight back against claims made by President Trump that he is a drug trafficker. To quash the story, Petro ordered that all his bank and credit card statements be released.

Canadian Museum for Human Rights has become ‘tool’ of one side of the Arab-Israeli story: David Asper

A newly announced permanent exhibit at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg is being met with heightened concern from Jewish groups.

“The Museum has allowed itself to become the tool, or dupe, of only one side of the story and thereby betrays its duty as a national institution to provide a common and inclusive meeting and educational space on the matter of human rights,” Winnipeg lawyer, businessman and trustee at the Asper Foundation, David Asper, told National Post in an email. His family led the museum’s founding in 2014.

CHARLEBOIS: Feds want to keep beef prices high — deliberately. Here’s how

We recently received information from a reliable industry source about how the federal government is administering beef import permits. If accurate, it raises serious concerns about whether the federal government is knowingly sustaining an outdated and opaque system that keeps beef prices unnecessarily high.

At a time when many families are struggling with food costs, this is more than a bureaucratic issue — it directly affects affordability.

As is so often the case in Liberal Canada someone is stealing the food off your plate.
