Speaking at the Welt Security Summit on July 2, Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperge recounted that Merkel had told the arms sector: “We don’t really need you, if there is a problem we call the Americans.” The dependence on Washington, he suggested, had been a deliberate choice.

He added that prior to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, there was “no great need for weapons systems in Germany itself” and that companies like Rheinmetall had been pushed into a “dirty corner” because they exported arms.

“They actually didn’t want us here in Germany,” he remarked.

The United States’ top trade official is pointing to Canada’s deepening economic ties with China as one of the reasons Washington is refusing to renew the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement on free trade (CUSMA) in its current form.

Speaking to Global News on Thursday, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the White House is concerned Beijing could use Canada as a back door into the American market.

My suspicion is the Americans are not much concerned with economic matters but worry more at the ChiCom compromised security risk Canada is becoming.

NATO’s European members and Canada have signaled a readiness to fully take over the financing of Ukraine’s fight against Russia

NATO members are hoping to pledge €70 billion ($80 billion) in military aid to Ukraine for 2026 and “at least equivalent levels” of support in 2027, when they meet at an upcoming summit in Turkey on July 6 and 7.

The funding pledge was revealed in a released text of the summit’s declaration, which was approved by the ambassadors of all NATO’s ⁠32 members, including the United States.

… European NATO members and Canada will provide the majority of the funding.

The move comes in response to declining support to provide aid to Ukraine by US President Donald Trump, with Kyiv’s European allies signaling a readiness to take over the financing of Ukraine’s fight against Russia.
