Sundance Liked Her Documentary on Terrorism, Until Muslim Critics Didn’t

The film festival gave Meg Smaker’s “Jihad Rehab” a coveted spot in its 2022 lineup, but apologized after an outcry over her race and her approach.

Meg Smaker felt exhilarated last November. After 16 months filming inside a Saudi rehabilitation center for accused terrorists, she learned that her documentary “Jihad Rehab” was invited to the 2022 Sundance Festival, one of the most prestigious showcases in the world.

Film critics warned that conservatives might bridle at these human portraits, but reviews after the festival’s screening were strong.

“The absence of absolutes is what’s most enriching,” The Guardian stated, adding, “This is a movie for intelligent people looking to have their preconceived notions challenged.” Variety wrote:

The film “feels like a miracle and an interrogative act of defiance.”

But attacks would come from the left, not the right. Arab and Muslim filmmakers and their white supporters accused Ms. Smaker of Islamophobia and American propaganda. Some suggested her race was disqualifying, a white woman who presumed to tell the story of Arab men.

Far right demonstrators demand British government overturns its immigration policy as Met police make arrest and keep them apart from ‘anti-fascist’ counter-demo

The Metropolitan Police have arrested one man and are seeking to keep apart rival demonstrations of far-right protesters and anti-fascists in Westminster.

Pro-Putin and Tommy Robinson-aligned group ‘Patriots for Britain’ held an anti-immigration march at Parliament Square from midday.

Anti-fascists (known as ‘Antifa’), meanwhile, gathered at nearby Marsham Street to protest at the Home Office just yards away.

Iran’s women are desperate and furious. They won’t take it any more

Mahsa Amini was just 22 when she died in suspicious circumstances while detained in Tehran. Mahsa, from the northwestern Iranian province of Kurdistan, was pronounced dead on September 16 from suspected brain damage caused during her time in police custody. She is believed to have been arrested for wearing her headscarf in what was deemed an “improper” manner.

The recent outbreak of violence against the Indian community in Leicester, England, has again drawn our attention to the serious existential crisis that Europe is going through, fuelled largely by Islamic immigration

The massive increase in Islamic immigration has wreaked havoc on the politics, society and culture of the West, which is today seriously grappling with the problem of an altered demographic profile of their countries, besides increasing crime rates and terror attacks. The recent outbreak of violence against the Indian community in Leicester, England, has again drawn our attention to the serious existential crisis that Europe is going through, fuelled largely by Islamic immigration. It was this same continent that once happened to be the flagbearer of the lofty ideals of multiculturalism and melting-pot societies.

The headline on the front page of the Leicester Mercury this week read: ‘We will not let inciters of hate win.’

The respected local newspaper does not identify any of those exploiting tensions between Muslims and Hindus in a city held up as a model of multicultural Britain, but now living in fear of sectarian violence.

One of the agitators, however, who has remained anonymous until today, is a man whose notoriety extends far beyond the East Midlands.

Pro-government marchers call for executions, as protests continue in Iran

TEHRAN: Thousands demonstrated across Iran on Friday at government-backed pro-hijab counter rallies, after a week of bloody protests over the death of a woman arrested for wearing the Islamic headscarf “improperly.”

At least 50 people have been killed by security forces in the anti-government protests, Iran Human Rights, an Oslo-based organization, said on Friday — more than three times the official death toll of 17, which includes five security personnel.

As it happened, Rithambara was too ill to attend, but the temple in question had already moved to cancel her appearance once local Muslims informed them about her record. But the rapid spread of violence through social media shows how sectarianism has evolved with technology.

Leicester disorder: Fear lingers among city’s Muslims and Hindus

Jay Patel was running a busy dinner service at his vegetarian restaurant, Shiv Sagar, on Leicester’s famous Golden Mile, on Saturday night. The dining room was packed with about 80 customers – couples, families, even a local councillor – when suddenly, huge crowds of young men marched past.

It’s estimated there were hundreds of men out that night. Most were masked and dressed head-to-toe in black – and some appeared to be armed. It was terrifying, Mr Patel tells me.

“People were running on this side, on that side, banging on the door… we closed all the lights and all the curtains,” he says. “It was very scary.”

What ever happened to Linda Sarsour? In a lengthy and weepy Sunday feature, the New York Times lamented the downfall of its golden girl: “In 2015, when she was 35, a New York Times profile anointed her — a ‘Brooklyn Homegirl in a Hijab’ — as something rare, a potential Arab American candidate for elected office.” But now, their once-rising star has fallen resoundingly, dismissed from the Women’s March for her vicious and open antisemitism and no longer the media darling she once was. The Times, in trying to polish Sarsour’s tarnished reputation on Sunday, came up with a novel explanation for her downfall: it wasn’t because her Jew hatred was too extreme even for the Left. It was because Linda Sarsour was the target of “Russian trolls.” What’s next, New York Times? Space aliens stole her brain?

Iranian morality officer: Why we tell women what to wear

The death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after she was detained by Iran’s so-called morality police has sparked angry protests, with women burning their headscarves in a defiant act of resistance against the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code and those enforcing it.

The Gasht-e Ershad (Guidance Patrols) are special police units tasked with ensuring the respect of Islamic morals and detaining people who are perceived to be “improperly” dressed.

Under Iranian law, which is based on the country’s interpretation of Sharia, women are obliged to cover their hair with a hijab (headscarf) and wear long, loose-fitting clothing to disguise their figures.
