Canadian demonstrators held, passports confiscated ahead of planned global march to Egypt-Gaza border

More than 40 Canadians planning to participate in the global march to Gaza, alongside thousands of other foreign activists, have been detained in Egypt and had their passports confiscated by authorities, organizers told CBC News.

A group of 83 Canadians arrived in Cairo on Wednesday and Thursday, ahead of the scheduled march to Egypt’s border with Gaza, an attempt to draw attention to the deepening humanitarian crises facing Palestinians under Israel’s blockade of the war-torn territory more than 20 months after attacks began.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand has called for an end to the escalating military confrontation between Israel and Iran following Israeli strikes on Iranian military targets and Iran’s launch of unmanned aerial vehicles toward Israeli territory.

In a statement released Friday, Anand said Canada is closely monitoring the rise in regional tensions and stressed that continued military action could trigger a broader regional conflict with devastating consequences.

In contrast, Opposition Leader and head of the Conservative Party Pierre Poilievre defended Israel’s right to defend itself, including by targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, which he said carries the potential for genocide.

Iranian missiles streaked across the sky above Israel after Tehran retaliated with a barrage of rockets.

The Israeli army has ordered all citizens to head to shelters after it said it had identified projectiles being launched from Iran.

Israeli ‘decapitation strikes’ wiped out top military command

Israel has launched a series of stunning strikes against Iran, aiming to cripple Tehran’s nuclear programme and its military leadership.

The IDF said about 200 jets were involved in striking around 100 targets on Friday morning, which appeared to include senior members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and top nuclear scientists.

Those killed included Hossein Salami, commander-in-chief of the powerful IRGC, and Mohammad Bagheri, chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, according to reports.

Did The Palestinian Authority President Really Condemn the Hamas Attack of October 7, 2023?

France claimed this month that Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas had condemned the invasion of Israel on October 7, 2023 by Hamas, the Iran-backed terrorist group. During the attack, Hamas terrorists and other Palestinians murdered 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals, wounded thousands. They kidnapped another 251 people to the Gaza Strip, where 52 – dead and alive – remain in captivity.

Paris said in a statement that the purported condemnation was included in a letter Abbas sent to France on the eve of a United Nations conference in New York, scheduled for this month, to push for recognizing the establishment of a Palestinian state. The conference is to be co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia.

Greta Thunberg is now on a plane out of Israel along with three other ‘freedom flotilla’ activists deported after they reportedly refused to watch footage of Hamas atrocities carried out on October 7, 2023 in Israel.

The crew of the Madleen ship, who had planned to sail to Gaza to deliver aid, were scooped up by Israeli Navy boats well before they reached shore yesterday and towed to the port of Ashdod.

Eight of the 12 activists refused to sign deportation papers and are being detained pending a court hearing. Thunberg and three others signed the documents and are now on a flight out of Israel.

Israel Katz, the defence minister, on Monday congratulated the IDF for its interception of an aid boat carrying Ms Thunberg and 11 other activists before it could reach Gaza.

After confirming the passengers would be deported back to their home countries once the boat reached the Israeli port of Ashdod, he said he had instructed troops to “show the flotilla passengers the video of the horrors of the October 7 massacre”.

London-based ‘Hamas operative’ behind Greta Thunberg’s Gaza flotilla

A man accused of being “a Hamas operative” based in London is a key figure behind Greta Thunberg’s Gaza-bound aid boat, it emerged on Monday.

Zaher Birawi, who was described in Parliament as a person with links to Hamas, describes himself as a “founding member” of the Freedom Flotilla International Coalition, which arranged the voyage by the aid boat Madleen.

Israeli forces boarded and seized the boat on Sunday – detaining the 12 pro-Palestinian activists it was carrying, including Ms Thunberg – as it attempted to bring a “symbolic” amount of aid to Gaza in defiance of an Israeli naval blockade.
