OTTAWA – Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino says the federal government is looking at its options when it comes to increasing security for politicians, adding the harassment many face represents a threat to democracy. He says that as the security situation becomes “more and more complex,” there’s a need to “bring the temperature down.”
This comes following a video posted online this weekend of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland being harassed in Alberta. The video shows a man yelling profanities at the minister in the lobby of Grande Prairie, Alta.’s city hall, before she and her staff enter the elevator.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called for political leaders to take a united stance against threats of violence and intimidation on Sunday, days after his deputy was confronted in Alberta by a man who repeatedly yelled profanity at her and called her a traitor.

So, a frustrated Albertan cursed at Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland.
Freeland later responded to the brief encounter with tact, though perhaps embellishing the “threat” factor.
It’s understandable that she felt intimidated by a man — flanked by a woman also yelling a thing or two — when he walked toward her loudly swearing.
While Conservative leadership candidate Pierre Poilievre keeps getting pounded by fellow leadership contenders, MPs in other parties and much of the media for dividing Canadians, suggesting he is the instigator of verbal attacks and threats aimed at Liberal and NDP politicians and journalists, let’s not forget who the divider-in-chief in Canada is.
More than half of Canadians say they can’t keep up with the rising cost of living, according to a recent poll by the Angus Reid Institute.
The survey, published on Aug. 22, found that 56 percent of Canadians say they are struggling to keep pace with soaring prices as high inflation continues to force them to pinch their pennies.
“The level of month-to-month price increases was the lowest so far this year. However, prices have risen by 7.6 per cent since July 2021, meaning there is much work for the Bank of Canada left to do to return the country to its target rate of two percent,” the polling firm said.
As we mark the six-month anniversary of Vladimir Putin’s assault on Ukraine and on world order, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the creation of a special team in Canada to counter the Kremlin’s raging disinformation campaign.
There is a real need to address this threat to the concept of truth, which is the basis of democracy and human rights. But why limit the team’s mandate to the lies of just one offender? This essentially tells China that Ottawa will not be responding to the more richly funded propaganda scheme being run out of Chinese embassies and consulates across Canada.

Funding for community groups a central plank of Canada’s first ever LGBTQ2S+ ‘action plan’
The federal government says it will prioritize direct funding for community groups under Canada’s first ever federal LGBTQ2S+ “action plan,” stating that they are the best-placed organizations to identify and deliver the support needed to address “persisting inequities” and improve the wellbeing of LGBTQ2S+ individuals in this country.
Through the plan, the government is also pledging to study emerging criminal justice issues such as HIV non-disclosure; adopt the usage of the “more inclusive” 2SLGBTQI+ acronym; and launch an awareness campaign aimed at combatting discrimination.
Tell me an election isn’t in the wind. This should be fun as the TERF wars heat up so there’s that.
