Philippine militants accused of beheading Canadian tourists surrender

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Two long-wanted Abu Sayyaf militant commanders accused of beheading two kidnapped Canadian tourists and a German in the southern Philippines have surrendered to authorities, officials said Friday.

Almujer Yadah and Bensito Quitino gave themselves up to military officials in Jolo town in southern Sulu province and surrendered their assault rifles, Sulu military commander Maj. Gen. Ignatius Patrimonio and other security officials said. The officials did not provide details of how and when the surrenders were arranged.

Justin will probably grant them citizenship.

A Riverdale actor killed his mother to spare her from witnessing his plan to assassinate Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

British Columbia prosecutors said during a sentencing hearing on Monday that Ryan Grantham, 24, fatally shot his 64-year-old mother, Barbara Waite, ‘to save her’ from seeing his assassination plot against the Canadian prime minister unfold.

Chrystia Freeland slams Pierre Poilievre as ‘economically illiterate’

OTTAWA — Canada got a taste Thursday of what a head-to-head political fight between two people believed to want the country’s top political job — the post of prime minister — would look like.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland lambasted Pierre Poilievre — the front-running candidate for the Conservative party’s top job — for his attacks on the central bank and his promise to fire its governor, Tiff Macklem, if he becomes prime minister.

I want them to oil wrestle, winner takes all.

High gas prices likely to continue into 2023, research firm says

Consumers can expect fuel prices at the pump to remain high into next year due to disruptions to Russian oil supplies and as refineries struggle to meet demand recovering from the pandemic, consultancy Wood Mackenzie said.

The pressure should ease in the second half of next year when several new large refineries including in the Middle East are expected to start up, WoodMac said in a report.

Chrystia Freeland details in $8.9B in financial supports in major economic speech

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland is delivering her first major speech since the budget today, outlining $8.9 billion in financial supports her government has introduced already to help Canadians deal with rising inflation.

“We know that Canadians are worried about inflation and that they’re asking what their government is going to do about it,” Freeland said in a media statement.

“That’s why we have a new Affordability Plan — $8.9 billion in new support this year — that is going to put more money in the pockets of Canadians at a time when they need it most.”

She sounds very silly.

Canada’s military police charge retired lieutenant-general with sexual assault

Canada’s military police have charged recently retired Lt.-Gen. Trevor Cadieu — who had been tapped to lead the army late last year — with two counts of sexual assault.

The Canadian Forces Provost Marshal announced the charges in a press release on Wednesday, saying the charges were laid by the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service.

… Cadieu is currently in Ukraine where he has been serving as a senior advisor to the Ukrainian military after suddenly retiring from the Canadian Forces in April. In a statement, Cadieu said he is returning and will cooperate with the judicial process.

The U.S. sees Canada in 3Ds, and that’s not good

… There are very few things Republicans and Democrats see eye-to-eye on these days so we should take note when there’s an emerging bipartisan consensus about Canada. When U.S. officials look at Canada through both red and blue lenses, three “Ds” pop out at them: dairy imports, digital taxes and defence spending.

These three “Ds” pose a particular risk to the Canada-U.S. relationship because, in each case, the White House and Congress believe Canada isn’t following through on commitments we’ve made to them. Whatever our own understanding of Canadian policies in these areas, to the Americans it looks like we’re going back on our word.

Scathing report highlights multiple failings that led to laundering of hundreds of millions of dollars in B.C.

Money Laundering

An 1,800 page report commissioned by the provincial government has found hundreds of millions of dollars of cash was laundered through B.C. casinos between 2008 and 2018.

The report by Austin Cullen is the result of 133 days of hearings, where the Commission of Inquiry into Money Laundering in British Columbia heard testimony from 199 witnesses.

Cullen was highly critical of the B.C. Lottery Corporation and several provincial ministers responsible for gaming for not doing enough to stop the rampant money laundering, which he says was happening in plain sight.

It’s a feature not a bug.

Today in “Who Gives A Crap” – New poll suggests Liberal, NDP voters prefer Charest and Brown over Poilievre

New polling suggests Liberal and New Democrat voters think Jean Charest or Patrick Brown would make the best leader of the federal Conservative party.

The data released by the research firm Leger is based on an online survey it did of 1,528 Canadian adults last weekend using computer-assisted web interviewing technology.

It cannot be assigned a margin of error because internet-based polls are not considered random samples.

Key ‘Freedom Convoy’ figure pleads guilty to counselling mischief, released from jail

Tyson “Freedom George” Billings emerged from the Ottawa courthouse Wednesday brandishing a Canada flag to a torrent of cheers and airhorns after pleading guilty to a charge related to the convoy protest that seized the city earlier this year.

Billings spent 116 days in jail before pleading guilty to counselling to commit mischief. Other charges, including intimidation, obstructing police, mischief and disobeying a court order, were withdrawn by the Crown.

Governor General, guests rack up $100K in-flight catering bill during Dubai trip

OTTAWA — Canada’s vice-regal racked up a nearly $100,000 catering bill on board a government aircraft during a recent week-long trip to the Middle East.

An order paper question submitted by Conservative MP Michael Barrett shows Gov. Gen. Mary Simon and her 29 fellow passengers using $93,117.89 in catering services aboard an RCAF CC-150 Polaris during her March 16 to March 24 trip to Expo 2020 in Dubai.

Can anyone explain why this token figurehead needs to meet with anyone abroad? Did they find potential mass graves in Dubai?

“It has to be abolished,” Barakat said at the event. He complained that Hezbollah, Hamas and PFLP we officially recognized by Canada as terrorist organizations.

“Canada is listing Palestinians and Arab organizations on the so-called terrorist list,” he said.

When Canadian flags are offensive, it’s time to clean up Ontario’s schools

The Canadian flag is now offensive to some of the powers that be in Ontario’s education system. Last week, a school principal sent home a letter warning parents that their child was about to be offered a free Canadian flag and if they didn’t want to receive one, they should send the attached form back.
