How Iowans feel about Trump’s tariffs, Canada’s treatment as Republicans vie for support

This weekend, hundreds of thousands of people are attending the Iowa State Fair — a major attraction featuring several days of entertainment, a rodeo and even a life-size butter cow that’s been carved every year since 1911.

Much like the Calgary Stampede in Canada, the Iowa State Fair is a crucial stop for politicians to meet voters, making it a hotbed for political debates — especially when U.S. midterms are coming up.

And this year, one of the topics on Iowans’ minds is U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war.

Pork chops on a stick, that’s all anyone should care about.

Europe’s tallest Virgin Mary statue unveiled in rural Poland

Europe’s tallest Virgin Mary statue unveiled in rural Poland

A statue of the Virgin Mary believed to be Europe’s tallest has been formally unveiled in a small Polish village.

The 55.6-metre (182ft) concrete figure is roughly two double-decker buses longer than Rio de Janeiro’s smaller – if more prominently placed – Christ the Redeemer monument, though it still pales in comparison to a 98m Virgin Mary erected in the Philippines.

The ecclesiastical sculpture in rural Konotopie was consecrated by a local bishop in a ceremony on Saturday, a day chosen to coincide with the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Not sure any other Euro state would have allowed this out of fear they might anger their Muslim settlers.

Poland has kept the Muslims out for the most part.

Border services agents went to the demonstration site on Wednesday looking for people with expired visas who have overstayed their permitted time in Canada.

THREE separate mass shootings erupt across the US, with terrified victims in Virginia, Kentucky and Chicago running for cover

Chaos erupted across the US on Saturday, with three separate mass shootings threatening to snuff out dozens in Virginia, Kentucky and Chicago.

In Kentucky, five people were shot, one fatally, when gunshots rang out in a park near a packed downtown bar district Saturday evening. At least 13 shots sent revelers running for cover, footage posted by a local official showed.

‘My heart is broken. This evening we had a shooting at the park with multiple victims and one fighting for his life,’ ONE Lexington Director Devine Carama wrote.

Nothing special just a regular Saturday night.

Lord have mercy.

Jesse Kline: Carney doing nothing to stop businesses fleeing to escape Trump tariffs

Jesse Kline: Carney doing nothing to stop businesses fleeing to escape Trump tariffs

As U.S. President Donald Trump’s Wednesday tariff deadline looms, there are worrying signs that Canadian manufacturers are going to pack up and move south of the border. This is unsurprising for a country that imposes high costs on businesses and seems to have resigned itself to being Trump’s whipping boy.

Last month, KPMG Canada released the results of a survey of 275 Canadian manufacturers conducted in May, which found that 42 per cent of them have considered, or are currently considering, moving production south of the border. Eleven per cent said they’re thinking of moving their head offices to the United States.

Alaska candidate for US Senate seat rejects Kamala Harris’s unsolicited support

Alaska US Senate candidate Mary Peltola has rejected the support of Kamala Harris, her fellow Democrat, after the 2024 presidential candidate sent out a seemingly unsolicited fundraising appeal on Peltola’s behalf.

Harris, who lost Alaska – typically a Republican-voting state – by 13 points during her unsuccessful White House run, on Wednesday sent an email from her political organization to supporters of Peltola, a former US House member.

I don’t think the Dems want her.

German police threaten to defy AfD orders if party takes power

Germany’s police union has called on officers to defy any “unconstitutional” orders if the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party comes to power.

Sven Hüber, the deputy president of the Union of Police, compared the hard-Right party to the Nazis, and said it was incumbent upon officers to uphold the constitution.

“You can’t swear an oath on the constitution and ally with its enemies at the same time,” wrote Mr Hüber in the lead article in the police union’s magazine.

I think Sven needs some remedial democracy lessons.

MAID Increasingly Used as Alternative to Health Care in Canada, Activist Says

LINCOLN, Ont.—A Canadian activist against euthanasia says the procedure is increasingly being used as a solution to address gaps in health care and mental health services, criticizing Canada’s ever-expanding medical assistance in dying (MAID) regime.

“I think that euthanasia and assisted suicide are basically the cynical solution to everything that ails us. Palliative beds are really expensive—body bags are not,” said Jonathon Van Maren, author and communications director at the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform.

BARBER: Speak the truth — get kicked out of Canada

BARBER: Speak the truth — get kicked out of Canada

One of the more intriguing aspects of Canadian society is the observation that Americans constitute the sole nationality toward which citizens may express bias openly. This perception is especially pronounced in Eastern Canada compared to the West, yet a reciprocal sentiment is absent in the US. Such hostility bears an analogy to sibling rivalry and underscores a form of tribalism. Regardless of the motivations behind the recent petition to have the US Ambassador Pete Hoekstra named persona non grata, some Canadians have identified themselves far too closely with the “elbows-up” campaign associated with Prime Minister Mark Carney. To do so, they risk conflating the Prime Minister’s propaganda with their own personal identity. A detailed explanation of this identity fusion was provided by Jasmin Laine recently.

Muslim Association promises ‘Jew-free’ incident will not recur at future pogroms

The Muslim Association of Canada has released an update following an incident that occurred during its convention in Toronto in May when the phrase “Jew free” was shown on a word-cloud screen of submissions during a seminar session.

“First, MAC wishes to re-iterate that this phrase is offensive and hurtful to Jewish Canadians, to Muslim Canadians, and to anyone committed to a pluralistic society,” MAC says in the August 12 statement, adding that it “is unequivocally against Islamic teachings.”

Bill Maher’s Take on Trump’s Secret Turkey Flight Will Not Please the Lib Press Corps

If Bill Maher can understand the dynamics behind why President Trump had to secretly switch plans to avoid a credible assassination threat in Turkey, then you know the media is a bunch of babies. We already know that they are, but this manufactured drama over that July flight remains a point of contention among this cadre of entitled clowns.
