China’s war games amount to ‘sea and air blockade’ of Taiwan

China’s unprecedented war games set to encircle Taiwan amount to a “sea and air blockade” of the island, Taipei said on Wednesday.

Some of Beijing’s planned military exercises will take place within Taiwan’s 12 nautical mile sea and air territory, according to the defence ministry.

China’s plans come after House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi became the highest-level US visit to Taiwan in 25 years when she touched down on Tuesday.

‘A new phenomenon’: Big investors eye Canada’s home market, ReMax president says

Investment firms have become the biggest new buyers of U.S. homes — a trend that could make home ownership more difficult for average families.

The idea of big investors buying single-family homes to rent them out is “just in its infancy” in Canada, but is worth watching, according to the president of one of this country’s largest real estate firms. Some advocacy groups fear families can’t compete against money managers with billions in assets.

Mmmmm … Regent Park was one of Canada’s largest social housing neighbourhoods. Now, a studio there costs more than $2,000 to rent

Trudeau’s Indo-Pacific Strategy Pretends Communist China Doesn’t Exist

Canada must put China ‘front and centre’ in Indo-Pacific strategy or it risks irrelevance, experts say

The federal government’s forthcoming Indo-Pacific strategy must explicitly recognize and respond to the security threat China poses to the region, experts say, otherwise Canada risks being regarded as irrelevant in a part of the world that is expected to be a centre of economic growth for decades.

The Indo-Pacific region, which stretches from North America to India’s west coast, is home to 60 per cent of the world’s population, and it accounts for 60 per cent of global gross domestic product. About 60 per cent of world maritime trade passes through its oceans, a third of that through the South China Sea, where Beijing has made sweeping territorial claims.

… Two sources with knowledge of the strategy said the first draft, which was compiled by a team from Global Affairs, made no mention of China.

The strategy should have one goal – Make Communist China a pariah state.

Massive hail storm smashes car’s window in Alberta

Horrific footage shows the moment when drivers on a major Canada highway were slammed with hail the size of golf balls on Monday.

Gibran Marquez was traveling on a central Alberta highway with two others when the trio had to pull over as their vehicle was hit with hail.

Marquez posted the video of the storm on Twitter that showed the passengers pulled over on the highway and ducking while chunks of hail break the car windows.

Taliban under scrutiny as US kills al-Qaida leader in Kabul

ISLAMABAD (AP) — The U.S. drone strike that killed al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri on the balcony of a Kabul safe house intensified global scrutiny Tuesday of Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers and further undermined their efforts to secure international recognition and desperately needed aid.

The Taliban had promised in the 2020 Doha Agreement on the terms of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan that they would not harbor al-Qaida members. Nearly a year after the U.S. military’s chaotic pullout from Afghanistan, al-Zawahri’s killing raises questions about the involvement of Taliban leaders in sheltering a mastermind of the 9/11 terror attacks and one of America’s most-wanted fugitives.

Fearless prediction … Biden paid the Taliban for al-Zawahri

Jaffa: When Outnumbered Christian Warriors Defeated Muslim Hordes

Today in history, a small band of Christian warriors defeated a massive horde of Muslims.

On July 27, 1192, Saladin, the great sultan-hero of Islam, surrounded and besieged the tiny Christian-held town of Jaffa. According to contemporary chronicles, the Muslims numbered as much as 20,000 and “covered the face of the earth like locusts.”

Man who threw away £150m in bitcoin hopes AI and robot dogs will get it back

A computer engineer who accidentally threw away a hard drive containing approximately £150m worth of bitcoin plans to use artificial intelligence to search through thousands of tonnes of landfill.

James Howells discarded the hardware from an old laptop containing 8,000 bitcoins in 2013 during an office clearout and now believes it is sitting in a rubbish dump in Newport, south Wales.

The council has previously denied the 37-year-old’s repeated requests to search the site due to environmental concerns but he has hatched a £10m hi-tech scheme backed by hedge fund money to find the digital assets.

Pope Francis and the Left’s March to the Papacy

For a Church that was always regarded as “unchangeable,” the impossible has happened.

There seems little doubt that the Roman Catholic Church in 2022 is on a mission to destroy itself.

For a Church that was always regarded as “unchangeable,” the impossible happened.

The Second Vatican Council, thought to bring a new Pentecost to the Church, did the opposite. It emptied convents, seminaries and monasteries. It changed the liturgy in a radical way so as to make the Mass unrecognizable from what it had been for centuries.

Republicans attack Matt Walsh for telling the truth about slavery

One of the most pernicious things that has happened recently in America is the 1619 Project, an error-riddled “history” of the United States that presents our nation as one predicated solely on the evils of African slavery, beginning when Europeans first set foot on North American soil. This original sin, says the 1619 Project, tainted everything that followed. Therefore, only racists can love America. Obviously, Democrats embraced this history, but, when commentator Matt Walsh discussed the larger history of world slavery, he learned that some Republicans don’t want the truth to be put out there, either.

Ayman al-Zawahiri and the crisis of America Killing Zawahiri was right and just.

But what comes next?

Ayman al-Zawahiri deserved to die. It is difficult to overstate how much evil this man unleashed on the world. Osama bin Laden, his predecessor as leader of al-Qaeda, may have been the better-known and more showy of the two mass murderers. But it was Zawahiri who was the ideologue, the ideas man, the intellectual architect of al-Qaeda’s anti-Western, anti-Christian, anti-Semitic doctrine of hyper-violence. From New York City to Nairobi, Riyadh to Bali, thousands of souls perished at the hands of Zawahiri’s 21st-century breed of Islamist barbarism. That hellfire missile that killed him in Kabul on Sunday did humanity a favour. Rest in pieces.

A catastrophic energy crisis will fuel a revolt against our failed elites

Politicians cannot shirk responsibility now for the extreme hardship millions of people are about to face

This is the summer before the storm. Make no mistake, with energy prices set to rise to unprecedented highs, we are approaching one of the biggest geopolitical earthquake in decades. The ensuing convulsions are likely to be of a far greater order of magnitude than those that followed the 2008 financial crash, which sparked protests culminating in the Occupy Movement and the Arab Spring.

The gathering crisis could prove even more catastrophic than the oil shock of the 1970s, which wrecked the administrations of three British prime ministers, presaged 40 years of American entanglement in the Middle East, and (due to the oil glut that followed) ultimately triggered the Soviet Union’s collapse.

Michael Taube: If you really think Harper’s endorsement of Poilievre was because he’s losing, think again

While former Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper occasionally writes, speaks and makes public appearances, it’s very rare for him to issue a political endorsement. When he decided to do just that for Conservative leadership candidate Pierre Poilievre, many people were caught off-guard and took notice.

The U.S.’s freshwater crisis could lead Washington to look northward. Is Canada ready to quench its thirst?

Our closest neighbour to the south has a serious problem – and I’m not talking about racial animus, gun violence or political polarization.

To put it bluntly, a large swath of the U.S. is running out of accessible water. And that is putting the lives of millions of Americans in danger.
