More Violence In Ceuta: Clashes With Residents, Ambush On Soldiers

Ceuta has endured another night of violence, but this time the crisis has crossed a new threshold.

Tensions that have been building for almost a month have now resulted in physical clashes between groups of residents and invaders camped on the beaches and, hours later, in an attack on soldiers deployed to monitor the city.

A years long car theft epidemic in Canada has gotten so bad that, despite a police crackdown, thieves break into homes just to steal car keys. Thousands of cars vanish each year.

The phenomenon, records and interviews show, is driven in part by an unexpected source: a booming black market for Western vehicles in wartime Russia.

While Western export bans have severed Russia from much of the auto market, they have not tempered the demand for brand-name SUVs and trucks. That has given rise to a sophisticated network of criminals that steals cars, hides them in shipping containers and sends them to Russia, often by way of the Middle East.

Muslim Brotherhood-aligned networks have gained influence across Canadian government, universities, charities and political organizations, according to a new report warning that Islamist groups are exploiting democratic institutions to expand their reach.

The 195-page report from the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy, or ISGAP, examines what it calls “Islamist entryism,” a strategy of gaining influence within established institutions.

C.I.A. Chief Delivered Bleak Assessment of Russia’s War in Secretive Moscow Visit

John Ratcliffe, the C.I.A. director, made a secretive visit to Moscow this week to privately share his bleak assessment of the state of the Russian war against Ukraine, and to urge the Russians to cut a deal before their military and economic situation gets worse, current and former officials said.

Mr. Ratcliffe delivered the message to Aleksandr V. Bortnikov, the head of Russia’s F.S.B. intelligence service, and made no threats about potential consequences for the Russian side should President Vladimir V. Putin ignore the C.I.A. director’s assessment and choose to continue fighting.

Conflict screen excludes Carpetbagger Carney from eight more government decisions

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney has been sidelined on eight more government decisions because of potential conflicts with his prior businesses, a new report says, including on help for Canada’s airlines and a loan to a Baffin Island mine.

The Privy Council Office, the government department that directly supports the prime minister, reports to the House of Commons Ethics committee every three months about how his ethics screen has been used.

Its latest report, which was sent in a letter dated Aug. 14, revealed Carney has also been kept out of the loop on matters involving housing and the government’s nuclear strategy.

Carney is in it for Carney.

Multiple vehicles burned at Scarborough MP’s home in suspected arson

Toronto police are investigating a case of suspected arson after multiple vehicles were damaged in the driveway of a Scarborough MP’s home early Thursday morning.

The incident happened shortly before 1:30 a.m. near Bellamy Road North and Lawrence Avenue East, at the residence of Scarborough Centre Liberal MP Salma Zahid.

Toronto Fire Services and Toronto police arrived at the scene, and firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze.

Toronto police say they are investigating the incident as a possible arson. However, police say there is currently no information about suspects.

No suspects but Carney and Chow both make statements.

Russia says UK ‘playing with fire’ amid reports CIA chief has warned Kremlin not to attack Nato

Russia has said it could retaliate against the UK for its support of Kyiv by striking military targets inside and outside Ukraine, amid reports that the director of the CIA warned the Kremlin against attacking Nato during a secretive visit this week.

Andy Burnham, Britain’s prime minister, said on Monday the UK would allow Kyiv access to classified technology to start ⁠its own production of Storm Shadow long-range cruise missiles. France has also agreed to supply missile technology. Maria ⁠Zakharova, Russia’s foreign ministry spokesperson, said on Thursday Britain and France were “playing ⁠with fire”.
