A small town west of Montreal has decided to officially recognize trees as living beings with rights of their own, in what an environmental organization describes as a first in Quebec and Canada.
A resolution adopted by Terrasse-Vaudreuil city council on June 9 declares that trees are worthy of protection, “including the right to life, to natural growth, to integrity and to regeneration.”
Mayor Michel Bourdeau says Quebec filmmaker André Desrochers inspired the community to take action.
Alan Greenspan, the influential economist who steered US monetary policy during his five terms as chair of the Federal Reserve under four presidents, has died aged 100.
The central bank said its former chair “helped establish the credibility that remains one of the Federal Reserve’s most important assets” in a statement on Monday that announced Greenspan’s death.
In a separate statement that she shared with NBC News, Andrea Mitchell – Greenspan’s wife and a correspondent of the network – said he died from complications of Parkinson’s disease. “He will be remembered for his brilliance and his kindness,” Mitchell’s statement to NBC said.
A third straight month of rising gas prices from the war in Iran pushed the annual rate of inflation above three per cent for the first time since 2023, Statistics Canada said Monday.
The annual rate of inflation jumped to 3.2 per cent in May, up from 2.8 per cent in April and topping most economists’ expectations.

A Canadian police office has been killed after an active shooter opened fire in Montreal on Monday morning, officials said.
The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) officer, who has not been named, was confirmed dead by the agency shortly after shots broke out around 11.30am in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood.
The unidentified suspect has been ‘neutralized’, police said.
