I escaped Europe’s dying democracies and discovered the real secret to America’s enduring success: AYAAN HIRSI ALI

When I arrived in the Netherlands in 1992, what struck me first wasn’t the weather or the language, but the unmistakable prosperity of Dutch society. Coming from a world defined by scarcity, the visible wealth of Western Europe felt like an alternate reality.

If I were to characterize what I saw in the 1990s with one word, it would be trust.

Voters trusted their democracies. Elections were meaningful, but not existential. Citizens generally saw their choices reflected in policy, particularly when their party won enough seats to shape the governing agenda.

Infiltration and Denial: Germany’s Islamism Blind Spot

Infiltration and Denial: Germany’s Islamism Blind Spot

here is good news and bad news when it comes to the debate about the dangers of Islamism in Germany.

The good news first: what could long only be whispered is now being discussed increasingly openly and is finding greater attention. The bad news: the lobby that has allowed this danger to grow to such proportions still exists and continues to reach deep into government and mainstream media circles—and is pushing back with might.

Two quite different news reports, and the way they have been handled, illustrate this.

MROZEK: Canada’s fertile ground for population collapse

MROZEK: Canada’s fertile ground for population collapse

Cardus recently surveyed women — and for the first time, men — about their fertility ideals and intentions. For context, Canada’s total fertility rate in 2024 was 1.25 children per woman. This means we have joined the company of nations like South Korea with “lowest of the low” fertility.

The survey results showed that both men and women wish to have more children than they actually have by their mid-forties. Men desire slightly more children than women, and 59% of men aged 40-44 have fewer children than they wish. Only 53% of women say the same. Fewer than 50% of men and women are at their ideal family size by the time they reach their forties.

Caroline Elliott: For Canada Day, give the ‘decolonize’ nonsense a rest

This Canada Day, let’s celebrate our great nation unequivocally without the obligatory nod to guilt and grievance. We have just one day a year dedicated to the celebration of the free, democratic, tolerant country our predecessors built for us, and plenty of other days each year to focus on the endless social justice causes favoured by politicians on the left.

‘Hellbrew of Hate’: The New Relevance of Cold War Anti-Communist Movies

‘Hellbrew of Hate’: The New Relevance of Cold War Anti-Communist Movies

These movies aren’t bad. In fact, many of them are great.

This was the thought I had in 2024, when I attended the American Film Institute’s series “Fabulous 50s.” The series highlighted American movies from the 1950s. There were classics screened: Ben-Hur. Carmen Jones, A Streetcar Named Desire. The Night of the Hunter, Singin’ in the Rain, and my favorite, Sweet Smell of Success.

Paper Agreements Will Not Disarm Terrorists

Paper Agreements Will Not Disarm Terrorists

For decades, Western diplomats and decision-makers have clung to one of the most dangerous illusions in the Middle East: the belief that Islamist terrorist organizations can be persuaded through negotiations and diplomatic agreements to surrender their weapons and abandon their jihad (holy war) against Israel.

Reality continues to prove that persuading terrorist regimes to give up their weapons is not the walk in the park they might have hoped.
