Two Leicestershire mini-marts linked to a convicted people smuggler exposed in a BBC investigation have been closed by the local council.

Europe is supposed to have the world’s strictest food safety regulations, and rightly so. Consumers expect the food they put on their tables to be not only of quality, but also safe to eat. Europeans are “increasingly looking to buy commercial products capable of minimizing damage to their health,” as a 2022 study puts it. Not to mention they also prefer to know what it is they are eating—which is not an outlandish thing to expect, one might think.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has answered the question of what it’s going to take to build a new oil pipeline in Canada – a gusher of about $60 billion of taxpayer money, for starters.
That’s up to $43.7 billion (minimum estimate $35.2 billion) for a pipeline from Alberta’s oilsands to southern B.C., 90% funded by federal and Alberta taxpayers, with 10% initially and up to 20% eventually coming from the Pembina Pipeline Corporation.
Canada was kind enough to let her in but she isn’t happy here so she wanted to attend an anti-Canada rally.

In the early 1980s, I read a book about personal finance that dramatically changed my life — by almost destroying it. I was tripped up by my naivety in not knowing that while strategy is good, strategy well timed is much better. I got the timing part wrong. The apartment was bought with maximum leverage (i.e. debt) and was located near a popular ski resort. Such was my strategy. The five units, converted to condominiums, hit the real estate market just as Pierre Trudeau announced the National Energy Program. Buyers disappeared. The bank that held my rather large mortgage also took possession of a 150-unit condominium project that went bankrupt, completed the construction, and offered three months’ free rent to new tenants. All of my renters left for these greener pastures. I went to the bank manager and screamed at him — literally.

When I’m describing my early years to my children it often feels like I’m talking about a journey made by time machine. At the age of 12 — a child myself — I was babysitting other people’s children. I am not sure why the authors of the study failed to mention mass immigration’s role in youth joblessness but I have my suspicions.
It is said that when Gandhi was asked what he thought of Western civilization, he paused for a few seconds before replying: “I think it would be a very good idea.” It was an amusing response even if it was a bit unfair. There was once such a thing as Western civilization; but the fact is, it is more or less behind us now. To speak of “civilization” in the context of modern Europe is to hide behind a fancy word. Deep down we all know it, even if it’s hard to admit: the game is up.
This Fourth of July is of the utmost significance. It is the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence from Britain. The occasion marks a defining moment in human history – the founding of a republic based on the principles of equality (‘all men are created equal’) and liberty (‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’). It is also a reminder of all that the nation and its people have achieved since the American Revolution.
