Is progressivism to blame for the West’s falling birth rates?

An NBC poll found this week that male Donald Trump voters under the age of 30 rank “having children” first among 13 options when asked what is most important to their “personal definition of success”. Female Kamala Harris voters, by contrast, put “having children” in 12th place. Zoomer women were less likely than their male counterparts to rank children as important, but the bigger difference was between Trump and Harris voters.

The Revolt of the Rich Kids

Armed with Ivy League diplomas and cultural capital but locked out of wealth and status, this disaffected class is fueling America’s new radicalism.

In America, we love a rags-to-riches tale. Think of Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish immigrant who rose from bobbin boy to steel magnate; Oprah Winfrey, who grew up poor in rural Mississippi; even

Elon Musk, the awkward South African transplant who transformed himself into the richest man alive.
These stories are endlessly recycled because they affirm a central American creed: that each generation can surpass the one before.

Today, however, that creed is starting to creak. In 2025, the most combustible force in American society isn’t upward mobility, but its opposite.

The Unravelling Accelerates

Minutes before we went on air, Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was shot on stage in Utah. A quarter-hour after the show ended, President Trump announced on Truth Social that Charlie was dead. As I write, the assassin has just been taken into custody.

Notwithstanding his meteoric rise, Charlie Kirk was still at the dawn of his brilliant career. As I said right at the end of the show, he was only seven at the time of 9/11. That was a rough guess on my part, but proved to be accurate: he died a month shy of his thirty-second birthday, leaving a three-year-old daughter and a one-year-old son who will grow up with no memories of their fearless father.

Lunatic repping himself in attempted Trump assassination trial files bonkers witness list

The whackjob on trial for allegedly plotting to kill President Trump rolled out a list of witnesses he wanted to call to the stand, including the commander-in-chief himself, activist Mahmoud Khalil and a Secret Service agent he claims asked him to “spank/slap ass.”

Ryan Routh, the wannabe assassin charged with trying to gun down Trump on his Florida golf course last year, filed the unhinged list of 24 witnesses on Sept. 2, calling Trump an “insecure ego idiot-mad fool.”

Routh is representing himself at his federal trial, which got under way with jury selection this week in Fort Pierce, Florida, despite having no formal legal training.

The Dark Philosophy of Deliveroo

Food delivery apps are a harbinger of decline.

The Victorians were obsessed with the idea of the future.

Unlike the dystopias of the 20th century, crafted through the horrors of war and tyranny, the Victorian futurists imagined bright, mechanised utopias where technology delivered fairness, abundance, and joy.

Edward Bellamy’s Looking Backward (1888) pictured Boston in the year 2000 as a land of equal wealth, credit cards, and benevolent corporations. William Morris, in News from Nowhere (1890), conjured a pastoral Thameside vista where the smog and industry of London was replaced with an artisanal commune in which government and money were no longer necessary.

‘Palestine’ can’t just be ‘conjured up’: Douglas Murray blasts Mark Carney

Outspoken British journalist Douglas Murray has a blunt take on Israel’s strikes in Qatar, targeting Hamas’s leadership. “The scandal is not that Israel acted, but that it had to.” In an interview in Montreal with National Post, Murray, the bestselling author of On Democracies and Death Cults: Israel and the Future of Civilization, offered a sharp and unapologetic view on Israel’s decision to target Hamas leaders in Doha.

We now support Hamas? What a stupid statement by Carney. h/t Mauser

‘Allah will burn them’: What pro-Palestinian students and allies say when they think no one is watching

In the wake of the Oct. 7 attacks on Israel, a group of Jewish students at Western University infiltrated two private group chats, belonging to Palestinian students and their allies in the London, Ont., community.

The students’ discoveries shine a light on what some opponents of Israel are saying to one another when they think no one’s watching. What they found in the chat histories is unsettling: a stream of Hitler memes, pro-Hamas videos and antisemitic cartoons. More alarming is the advice group chat members give each other on escaping detection. There are even tips on bringing knives to peaceful protests.

I’m shocked.

Self-defence deters criminals more than complying

In Canada, if people can’t successfully “hide” from criminals, police officials are advising crime victims to “comply” with a criminal’s demands. Jim MacSween, the chief of York Regional Police since 2020 who oversees 1.2 million residents living in York Region, warned residents not to attempt to confront intruders but to comply with the criminal until law enforcement arrives.

Charlie Kirk shooting suspect arrested in Utah: FBI

The suspect in Charlie Kirk’s assassination at Utah Valley University Wednesday has been arrested, according to FBI Director Kash Patel.

The alleged gunman was nabbed after an hours-long manhunt across the Orem campus, which saw heavily armed officers from numerous agencies combing through the buildings room by room.

Kirk, 31, was fatally shot in the neck around after 12:20 p.m. local time Wednesday as he was speaking on the campus south of Salt Lake City.

Four Seconds on a Charlotte Train

The slaughter of Iryna Zarutska was horrific, unacceptable—and preventable.

The video of Decarlos Brown, Jr., slaughtering 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska on a Charlotte light-rail train on the night of August 22nd is sickening in many ways, but one aspect of the horror was how mundanely it unfolded. All of us who have had to contend with greater chaos and danger on mass-transit systems since 2020 have created useful fictions for ourselves: that wouldn’t happen to me, because I know not to sit near the crazy guy. I know to sit around other people. I know how to defend myself—punch someone, bite someone, scream. The video demolishes that fiction. We’ve also had to contend with a related fiction: that our transit systems remain safe. It’s time we stopped accepting random murders on our transit systems as normal.

The TTC is an urban transit nightmare.
