Why Portland’s hipsters may secretly approve the National Guard

Donald Trump’s latest pledge to send the National Guard into Portland feels less like a response to a crisis and more like an unwanted sequel. The original deployment occurred in the summer of 2020, amid months of protests and recurring clashes near courthouses and police stations, some of which turned violent. The city saw a deadly incident that August when Michael Reinoehl, a self-proclaimed anti-fascist, shot and killed Aaron “Jay” Danielson, a member of the far-Right group Patriot Prayer. Reinoehl was subsequently killed by a US Marshals task force.

This time, the backdrop is far quieter: protests over ICE raids in 2025 are real but a fraction of the intensity of the George Floyd era. Plus, there are signs that Portland, like other blue cities, has quietly begun its own course correction.

Premier Ford wants to make Ontario a surveillance state

Premier Ford wants to introduce surveillance cameras in Ontario communities to catch suspects in home invasions, car thefts

Premier Doug Ford says he is looking to expand the use of surveillance cameras in municipalities across the province to help catch suspects in car thefts and home invasions, but he is providing few details about exactly how such an initiative would work.

Ford made the comments at an unrelated transit news conference in Hamilton on Monday morning.

“I was asking the mayor (of Hamilton) about crime as well because I want to start introducing cameras on crime, if approved by residents,” Ford said.

It’s always for our own good.

The Gaza flotilla: the Woke Man’s Burden

I’m old enough to remember when being a peacenik meant you wanted less Western meddling overseas, not more. Seems things have changed. Exhibit A: the Gaza flotilla. These smug sea-farers pose as peace activists, like Mother Teresa in a keffiyeh. Yet behind the humanitarian pantomime there lurks a brutish neo-colonial urge to rally the mighty nations of the West against the uppity little state of Israel. Some on the flotilla are openly calling on powerful states to send their warships to help ‘break’ Israel’s blockade of Gaza. You can call that ‘aid’ if you like – I call it warmongering.

The Graduate now comes with ‘sex scene’ trigger warning

A Russell Group university has placed a trigger warning on the 1967 film The Graduate for containing “some sexual scenes”.

The Oscar-winning rom-com tells the story of freshly graduated Benjamin Braddock, played by Dustin Hoffman, who is seduced by the older, married Mrs Robinson, portrayed by Anne Bancroft.

In the most famous line from the film, Benjamin exclaims, “Mrs Robinson, you’re trying to seduce me… aren’t you?”, before he eventually falls in love with Mrs Robinson’s daughter, Elaine.

KLEIN: Is Canada dividing itself with race-based sentencing?

A Calgary man sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl, terrorized her with threats, and left scars that will last a lifetime. The Crown sought 10 years behind bars. The judge agreed the sentence was fitting. But then came the caveat: “But for his Gladue factors, I would have imposed the sentence sought by the Crown.” And just like that, two years were knocked off.

Charlie Kirk assassination suspect Tyler Robinson is allowed to hide his face in latest court hearing

Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin Tyler Robinson appeared in court on Monday but hid his face during the hearing.

Robinson, 22, and his newly appointed legal counsel asked to have his waiver hearing postponed and did not enter a plea.

Utah’s court system gives people accused of crimes an option to waive their legal right to a preliminary hearing and instead schedule an arraignment where they can enter a plea.

Digital ID Can Only End Badly

It’s finally happening—after decades of successive governments threatening Brits with a mandatory ID scheme, the UK is set to at last impose the ‘BritCard.’ Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer is planning to reheat the Blair-era plan to make national identification compulsory in the UK. The government intends to complete the rollout of these cards by the end of 2029—before the next, presumably non-Labour, government can stop it.

The idea is that anyone with the right to work in the UK will be issued one of these digital ID cards, stored on your smartphone. This would contain a passport-style photo, as well as information like your full name, nationality, date of birth, and residency status. They would be issued not just to Brits but also to those born abroad, so long as they have permission to work in the UK.

MORGAN: The Carney government is floundering

With half a year having passed under Carney’s leadership, the Liberal government appears as directionless and inept as it ever was under Trudeau’s guidance. Liberal strategists successfully convinced Canadians that the trade war with the United States was such an urgent issue, it could only be managed under the brilliant guidance of the economic wizard, Mark Carney. Voters in Eastern Canada forgot about the decade of ineptitude under the Trudeau regime and kept the Liberals in power.

To say Carney has underperformed is an understatement.

LA tourism slumps with Canadian traffic falling 32% in the three months of Summer.

‘They just don’t come’: What’s making L.A.’s tourism tumble

Months of negative news have triggered a tough summer for tourism in Los Angeles, deepening the economic woes for a city buffeted by natural disasters and immigration raids.

Tourist arrivals fell by close to 10% this season, according to the latest numbers from Visit California.

… Of all the state’s international travelers, the most significant absence was from Canadian tourists. Arrivals from visitors from up north fell 32% in the three months of Summer.

You’ll note that Trump policies are to blame for everything, except the fires but I’m sure they’re working on that.

No mention that LA is a hopelessly mismanaged crime ridden gangsters paradise with a huge homeless problem and its signature industry is fleeing the city and state.

This is why they never want to solve the homeless crisis …

Olivia Chow warns Toronto faces tax increase — or people on the streets — due to shelter funding cuts

The city of Toronto is now facing cuts to its shelter funding from the province, threatening another one of the municipality’s key funding sources to house homeless people.

According to a letter from Mayor Olivia Chow published Friday, the province recently informed the municipality it is reducing allocated funding for next year to almost $8 million, compared to $19.75 million the city received this year and $38 million it got in 2024.

No homeless means no money to funnel to her commie pals for pet projects employing fellow toxic commies.

How many of the Liberal party’s “asylum seekers” use shelters in TO – nearly 30% of the total.

It’s extortion.

Crown Blocks SNC-Lavalin Private Prosecution

It’s Monday morning in Canada, and the swamp is alive and well. After seven years of stonewalling, weak investigations, and political cover for one of the most explosive scandals in recent history, the Trudeau machine just got what looks like its final shield. Ontario Crown prosecutors quietly stepped in to shut down Democracy Watch’s private prosecution against Justin Trudeau over the SNC-Lavalin affair—yes, the same SNC that got caught bribing Libyan officials and then rebranded itself “AtkinsRéalis” as if a name change erases corruption.
